The Obligation to Show Enmity Towards the Jews, Polytheists, and Other Disbelievers (Part Two)

This article, “The Obligation to Show Enmity Towards the Jews, Polytheists, and Other Disbelievers,” is part of the Fatwa Collection of Shaykh Bin Baz

In these noble verses, the believers are strongly urged to hate the disbelievers and to show enmity towards them for the sake of Allah, the Exalted, in many ways.

There is also a clear warning against taking them as close confidants, along with an explicit statement that they will never fall short in bringing harm to us.

This is the meaning of the statement of Allah, the Most High:

“They do not fall short in causing you ruin.” (Aali Imran: 118)

Al-khabāl (الخبال) means corruption, destruction, and sabotage.

Allah, Glorified be He, explicitly stated that they love to see us suffer. Al-‘anat (العنت) refers to hardship and affliction.

Allah also clarified that their hatred has already emerged from their mouths — for those who reflect and pay attention — and what their hearts conceal is far greater. The envy, hatred, and evil intentions they harbor against us are much greater than what they reveal openly.

Then Allah, the Most High, stated that these disbelievers may outwardly pretend to embrace Islam as a form of hypocrisy in order to achieve their wicked objectives. But when they return to their devils (their evil comrades), they bite their fingertips in rage against the Muslims.

Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, then mentioned that the blessings and successes granted to us — such as honor, empowerment, and victory over enemies — cause them distress and resentment.

Conversely, when we are afflicted with misfortunes such as defeat, illness, or the like, they rejoice. This is nothing but the result of their deep enmity and hatred toward us and our religion.

The stances of the Jews toward Islam, the Messenger of Islam ﷺ, and the Muslims as a whole bear clear witness to what is indicated in the noble verses — namely, the intensity of their hatred toward the Muslims.

The realities of what the Jews have done — both in our time, during the Prophetic era, and throughout history — are among the strongest evidences for this.

Likewise, the conspiracies and attacks against Islam and its followers by Christians and other disbelievers clearly support what has been stated in the Qur’an.

Their continuous efforts to cast doubt upon Islam, to alienate people from it, to confuse its followers, and to spend massive amounts of money on Christian missionaries and their evangelism — all of this supports what the noble verses have stated: the obligation to hate all disbelievers, to be cautious of them, their schemes, and to avoid taking them as close confidants.

It is obligatory for the people of Islam to be alert to these important matters and to show enmity and hatred toward those whom Allah has commanded to be opposed and hated — namely, the Jews, the Christians, and the polytheists — until they believe in Allah alone and adhere to His religion with which He sent His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

By doing so, they fulfill their adherence to the religion of their forefather Abraham and the faith of their Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which Allah clarified in the previous verse, where He, the Most High, said:

“Indeed, there has been for you an excellent example in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people: ‘Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from whatever you worship other than Allah. We have denied you, and there has appeared between us and you animosity and hatred forever until you believe in Allah alone.'” (Al-Mumtahanah: 4)
