The Obligation to Show Enmity Towards the Jews, Polytheists, and Other Disbelievers (Part Three)

وقوله تعالى:

And the statement of Allah, the Most High:

 وَإِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِ إِنَّنِي بَرَاءٌ مِمَّا تَعْبُدُونَ ۝ إِلَّا الَّذِي فَطَرَنِي فَإِنَّهُ سَيَهْدِينِ [الزخرف:٢٦، ٢٧]

“And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham said to his father and his people, ‘Indeed, I am disassociated from that which you worship. Except for He who created me; and indeed, He will guide me.'” (Az-Zukhruf: 26–27)

وقوله عز وجل :

And His statement, Glorified and Exalted be He:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَتَّخِذُوا الَّذِينَ اتَّخَذُوا دِينَكُمْ هُزُوًا وَلَعِبًا مِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ وَالْكُفَّارَ أَوْلِيَاءََ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ [المائدة : ٥٧]

“O you who have believed, do not take those who have taken your religion in ridicule and amusement among the ones who were given the Scripture before you and the disbelievers as allies. And fear Allah if you should [truly] be believers.” (Al-Ma’idah: 57)

والآيات في هذا المعنى كثيرة.

And there are many verses of this meaning.

وفي قوله تعالى :

And in the statement of Allah, the Most High:

لَتَجِدَنَّ أَشَدَّ النَّاسِ عَدَاوَةً لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا الْيَهُودَ وَالَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوا [المائدة : ٨٢]

“You will surely find the most intense of the people in animosity toward the believers [to be] the Jews and those who associate others with Allah.” (Al-Ma’idah: 82)

دلالة ظاهرة على أن جميع الكفار كلهم أعداء للمؤمنين بالله سبحانه وبرسوله محمد ﷺ،

This is a clear indication that all disbelievers are enemies of those who believe in Allah, the Exalted, and in His Messenger Muhammad ﷺ.

ولكن اليهود والمشركين عباد الأوثان أشدهم عداوة للمؤمنين،

However, the Jews and the idol-worshipping polytheists are the most hostile among them toward the believers.

وفي ذلك إغراء من الله سبحانه للمؤمنين على معاداة الكفار والمشركين عموما وعلى تخصيص اليهود والمشركين بمزيد من العداوة في مقابل شدة عداوتهم لنا، وذلك يوجب مزيد الحذر من كيدهم وعداوتهم.

In this is encouragement from Allah, Glorified be He, for the believers to show enmity toward the disbelievers and polytheists in general, and to especially direct greater hostility toward the Jews and the polytheists due to their intense animosity toward us. This necessitates greater caution against their plots and hostility.

ثم إن الله سبحانه مع أمره للمؤمنين بمعاداة الكافرين أوجب على المسلمين العدل في أعدائهم

Moreover, although Allah has commanded the believers to show enmity toward the disbelievers, He has also made it obligatory upon Muslims to act justly toward their enemies.

فقال تعالى :

Allah the Most High said:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُونُوا قَوَّامِينَ لِلَّهِ شُهَدَاءَ بِالْقِسْطِ وَلَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَآنُ قَوْمٍ عَلَى أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا اعْدِلُوا هُوَ أَقْرَبُ لِلتَّقْوَى [المائدة : ٨]

“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.” (Al-Ma’idah: 8)

فأمر سبحانه المؤمنين أن يقوموا بالعدل مع جميع خصومهم، ونهاهم أن يحملهم بغض قوم على ترك العدل فيهم

Thus Allah, Glorified be He, commanded the believers to uphold justice with all their adversaries and forbade them from letting hatred toward a people lead them to abandon justice.

وأخبر عز وجل أن العدل مع العدو والصديق هو أقرب للتقوى والمعنى: أن العدل في جميع الناس من الأولياء والأعداء هو أقرب إلى اتقاء غضب الله وعذابه.

He, Glorified be He, also informed that being just with both enemy and friend is closer to piety. The meaning is that justice toward all — allies and adversaries alike — is closer to avoiding Allah’s wrath and punishment.

وقال عز وجل :

And He, Glorified and Exalted be He, said:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ وَإِيتَاءِ ذِي الْقُرْبَى وَيَنْهَى عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنْكَرِ وَالْبَغْيِ يَعِظُكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ [النحل:٩٠]

“Indeed, Allah commands justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.” (An-Nahl: 90)

وهذه الآية الكريمة من أجمع الآيات في الأمر بكل خير والنهي عن كل شر،

This noble verse is among the most comprehensive in commanding all that is good and forbidding all that is evil.

ولهذا روي أن النبي ﷺ لما بعث عبدالله بن رواحة الأنصاري إلى خيبر ليخرص على اليهود ثمرة النخل، وكان النبي ﷺ قد عاملهم على نخيلها وأرضها بنصف ثمرة النخل والزرع، فخرص عليهم عبدالله ثمرة النخل،

It was narrated that when the Prophet ﷺ sent Abdullah bin Rawahah al-Ansari to Khaybar to assess the yield of the palm trees belonging to the Jews — as the Prophet ﷺ had entered into an agreement with them to share half of the produce of their date palms and crops — Abdullah assessed the produce for them.

فقالوا له إن هذا الخرص فيه ظلم،

They said to him, “This estimate is unfair.”

فقال لهم عبدالله رضي الله عنه:

So Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, replied:

(والذي نفسي بيده إنكم لأبغض إلي من عدتكم من القردة والخنازير، وإنه لن يحملني بغضي لكم وحبي لرسول الله ﷺ على أن أظلمكم)

“By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, you are more hateful to me than apes and pigs. But my hatred for you and my love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will not lead me to be unjust to you.”

فقال اليهود :

The Jews responded:

بهذا قامت السموات والأرض.

“By this, the heavens and the earth are upheld.”

فالعدل واجب في حق القريب والبعيد والصديق والبغيض،

Justice is obligatory whether toward one who is near or distant, friend or foe.

ولكن ذلك لا يمنع من بغض أعداء الله ومعاداتهم ومحبة أولياء الله المؤمنين وموالاتهم، عملا بالأدلة الشرعية من الكتاب والسنة، والله المستعان.

However, that does not negate the obligation to hate the enemies of Allah and to show enmity toward them, nor does it negate the obligation to love and ally with the righteous allies of Allah from among the believers — all based on the legal evidences from the Qur’an and the Sunnah. And Allah’s help is sought.
