Question:

If I am among those who drink wine (khamr), and I intend to fast tomorrow and the day after tomorrow (the ninth and tenth of Muharram), will this fast be counted for me, and consequently will my sins of the past year and the coming year be forgiven?

Answer Summary:

Fasting the Day of ‘Ashura or the Day of Arafah only expiates minor sins. As for major sins, they require sincere repentance (taubat nasuha). However, this is not a barrier to fasting the Day of Arafah, or ‘Ashura, or whatever you wish of voluntary good deeds such as prayer, fasting, charity, and rituals. Drinking wine does not prevent any of that, and falling into a major sin does not mean that you prevent yourself from acts of obedience and good deeds, thereby making matters worse. Rather, hasten to repent, give it up, and increase good deeds, even if your soul overcomes you and you fall into some sin. However, the validity and acceptance of the deed is one thing, and the specific virtue of expiating the sins of a year or two years is another thing.

Answer:

Fasting Arafah Expiates the Sins of Two Years

That by which Allah forgives the sins of two years is fasting the Day of Arafah, whereas fasting ‘Ashura expiates the sins of one single year. The virtue of fasting the Day of Arafah can be seen in the answer to the other question here,

and the virtue of fasting ‘Ashura in the answer to the other question here

  • The Virtue of Fasting ‘Ashura

There is no doubt that drinking wine is among the major sins, especially with persistence in it. For wine is the mother of all evils and it is the door to every evil. The Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam cursed ten categories regarding wine. At-Tirmidzi (1295) narrated from Anas bin Malik radhiyallahu ‘anhu, he said: “The Messenger of Allah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam cursed ten regarding wine: the one who presses it, the one for whom it is pressed, the one who drinks it, the one who carries it, the one to whom it is carried, the one who serves it, the one who sells it, the one who consumes its price, the one who buys it, and the one for whom it is bought.” Deemed sahih by al-Albani in Shahih at-Tirmidzi.

And what is obligatory is to give it up, repent from addiction to it, and turn towards Allah.

Fasting the Day of ‘Ashura or the Day of Arafah Only Expiates Minor Sins

Fasting the Day of ‘Ashura or the Day of Arafah only expiates minor sins. As for major sins, they require sincere repentance. Shaykhul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah said:

“It is authentically reported from him shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam that he said: Fasting the Day of Arafah expiates two years, and fasting the Day of ‘Ashura expiates a year. However, the absolute statement that it expiates does not necessitate that it expiates major sins without repentance; for he shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said regarding Friday to Friday and Ramadan to Ramadan: ‘An expiation for what is between them if major sins are avoided.’ And it is well-known that prayer is better than fasting, and fasting Ramadan is greater than fasting the Day of Arafah, yet it does not expiate bad deeds except with the avoidance of major sins as restricted by the Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. So how can it be thought that a voluntary fast of one or two days expiates fornication, theft, drinking wine, gambling, sorcery, and the like? This cannot be.” End of quote from Mukhtashar al-Fatawa al-Mishriyyah (1/254).

Ibn al-Qayyim rahimahullah said: “Some of them say: The Day of ‘Ashura expiates the sins of the whole year, and the fast of Arafah remains as an increase in reward. This deluded person does not know that fasting Ramadan and the five daily prayers are greater and more sublime than fasting the Day of Arafah and the Day of ‘Ashura, and they only expiate what is between them if major sins are avoided.”
