How should the fast of the Day of Arafah be observed when the time in different countries differs from the time of the pilgrims’ standing at Arafah?

الجواب

Answer:

الحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله، وبعد:

All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:

يوم عرفة وصيامه يكون لكلّ أهل بلد بحسب طلوع الفجر وغروب الشّمس لديهم . وصيامه يكفّر ذنوب سنتين كما قال عليه الصلاة والسلام : صِيَامُ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ أَحْتَسِبُ عَلَى اللَّهِ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ السَّنَةَ الَّتِي قَبْلَهُ وَالسَّنَةَ الَّتِي بَعْدَهُ وَصِيَامُ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ ( العاشر من شهر محرّم ) أَحْتَسِبُ عَلَى اللَّهِ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ السَّنَةَ الَّتِي قَبْلَهُ . رواه مسلم ١٩٧٦

The Day of Arafah and its fasting are determined for the people of each country according to the rising of dawn and the setting of the sun in their respective place. Its fasting expiates the sins of two years, as he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Fasting the Day of Arafah, I hope from Allah that it expiates the year before it and the year after it. And fasting the Day of ‘Ashura (the tenth of the month of Muharram), I hope from Allah that it expiates the year before it.” (Narrated by Muslim, no. 1976)
