Answer:
All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his companions. To proceed:
Using soap during ritual bathing is permissible. Hadiths have been narrated regarding the use of a cleanser along with water in several places in the Sunnah; among them is what was reported by Muslim and others in the story of the man who died while in the state of Ihram, as the Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “Wash him with water and lotus leaves (sidr).” (Narrated by Muslim)
And among them is what was reported by Muslim from ‘Aishah that the Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said to Asma when she asked him about a woman’s ghusl after menstruation, as he said to her: “One of you should take her water and lotus leaves and purify herself, and perform the purification well…” the hadith.
This indicates that mixing water with a cleanser does not strip it of being pure and purifying (thahur); this is the correct view—if Allah wills—.
However, some people of knowledge have said: The shari’ah-required ghusl is not valid except with absolute water (ma’ muthlaq), which is water that is free from being changed by any altering substance. This opinion has been held by many people of knowledge.
For this reason, we advise whoever intends to perform a shari’ah-required ghusl to wash their body with absolute water before using soap or after it, in order to escape from the scholarly disagreement.
And Allah knows best.
