Question:

After performing wudu for the Zuhr prayer, I remembered that on my arm there was a trace of adhesive material due to an injection I had received for some reason. The point is that I did not pay attention to it, performed the prayer, and continued doing so. However, I became afraid that it might have blocked the water from the skin. Are the prayers I performed valid?

Answer:

All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his companions. To proceed:

Indeed, the water reaching the skin is a condition among the conditions for the validity of wudu. So if there is a barrier that prevents water from reaching any part of the washed limbs of wudu, the purification becomes invalid. The criteria for this barrier is that it must possess a physical body (jirm) that prevents water from reaching the skin. As for color and traces that do not prevent water from reaching the skin, they do not affect the validity of purification.

An-Nawawi said: “If there is wax, dough, henna, or the like on some of his limbs, and it prevents the water from reaching any part of the limb, his purification is not valid, whether that is a large amount or small. However, if a trace of henna and its color remains on the hand or elsewhere without its physical substance, or the trace of liquid oil such that the water touches the skin of the limb and flows over it but does not stay fixed, his purification is valid.” End of quote.

Some people of knowledge provided a concession regarding a slight amount of that, and did not view the invalidation of purification because of it; this is the choice of Shaykhul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah.

Al-Mardawi said in Al-Inshaf: “If there is a slight amount of dirt under his fingernails that prevents water from reaching what is beneath it, his purification is not valid. This was said by Ibn Aqil and prioritized in Al-Qawaid Al-Ushuliyyah, At-Talkhish, and by Ibn Ruzain in his commentary. And it was said: it is valid, and this is the correct view. It was deemed correct in Ar-Ri’ayah Al-Kubra, by the author of Hawashi Al-Muqni’, and asserted in Al-Ifadat, and prioritized in Ar-Ri’ayah Ash-Shughra, and towards it is the inclination of the author, and it was chosen by Shaykh Taqiyuddin…”

And Shaykh Taqiyuddin appended every slight thing that blocks water wherever it may be on the body, such as blood, dough, and the like, and chose this view. End of quote.

By this, it becomes clear to you that this trace asked about, if it has a physical body that prevents water from reaching the skin, your purification is not valid, and it is obligatory upon you to repeat those prayers that you performed with this wudu; and the choice of Shaykhul-Islam in the matter has preceded. However, the view of the majority (jumhur) is more appropriate as it is more cautious and more absolving of liability.

But if this trace does not prevent water from reaching the skin, then your purification is valid and consequently you are not required to repeat those prayers.

And Allah knows best.
