Following the capture of Antioch, the Crusaders turned their focus toward Jerusalem. They held a council in Muharram 492 AH / November 5, 1098 CE in the Church of St. Peter in Antioch, where the leaders unanimously agreed to resume the march toward Jerusalem. Although Bohemond, Prince of Antioch, attended this council and concurred to join the march, he reneged when the decisive hour arrived and preferred to stay in Antioch. Baldwin, Prince of Edessa, acted similarly, as both had already attained their goal for setting out—establishing their own independent principalities.
Raymond led the Crusader host toward Jerusalem in Safar 492 AH / January 13, 1099 CE. The Crusaders advanced deep into the Levant, taking the western route and avoiding major inland cities like Aleppo and Damascus. The burden of defending those areas fell upon local powers, many of which could not single-handedly withstand the Crusader hordes, prompting them to seek peace under the threat of armed force. However, others did not yield to the threats and exerted every effort to stop the invasion. The Crusaders established contact with the rulers of Homs, Tripoli, and Shaizar, promising not to attack them in exchange for supplies, receiving favorable responses from those rulers.
This atmosphere paved the way for the Crusaders to occupy Krak des Chevaliers (Hisn al-Akrad) in Safar 492 AH / January 29, 1099 CE. However, certain areas like Arqa and Sidon resisted them successfully. Some cities concluded separate agreements with them, such as the Qadi of Jableh, who promised to pay a tribute of money and horses in exchange for being spared; similarly, the inhabitants of Beirut made peace with them.
The Crusaders captured the cities of Lydda, Ramla, and Bethlehem, moving from there toward Jerusalem. Its Fatimid governor had taken all precautions he deemed necessary to protect the Holy City, including strengthening its fortifications, ensuring the integrity of its walls, and securing provisions of food and water. He relied for its defense on a large garrison of Egyptian and Sudanese troops.
The Crusaders laid siege to Jerusalem in Rajab 492 AH / June 1099 CE. Less than a week into the siege, human, military, and food reinforcements reached them, and their morale surged with the capture of Jaffa. Meanwhile, the Fatimid garrison remained confined within the walls of Jerusalem, completely cut off from the outside world.
The siege of Jerusalem lasted nearly two months, during which the Franks constructed two siege towers overlooking the city walls. They used catapults from them, leading to the defeat of the Muslim defenders on the night of Sha’ban 23, 492 AH / July 14, 1099 CE. The city’s defenders fled to take refuge in Al-Aqsa Mosque and defend it. The Crusaders breached the city, stormed the mosque, and perpetrated a gruesome, brutal massacre inside, vividly described by Frankish Crusader historians themselves when one wrote: “Indeed, our men waded up to their ankles in the blood of Muslims.”
