We can also add to this that the forces assembled from several Levantine cities, in addition to Mosul after the fall of Antioch, marched out too late, only after the enemy had succeeded in achieving a significant part of its objectives by establishing two principalities in the northern Levant. One of these, the Principality of Antioch, was coastal, allowing the Crusaders to receive supplies and reinforcements from Western Europe.

The second, the County of Edessa, became a barrier separating the Seljuks of Rum in Asia Minor from the Abbasid Caliphate, as well as dividing Edessa from the remaining principalities in the Levant. Had this combined force—comprising Kerbogha, ruler of Mosul, the Emir of Damascus, and the governor of Jerusalem—marched out to aid the defenders of Antioch before its fall and exerted real effort during the immense hardships faced by the Crusaders during the siege, the situation would have been completely altered.

Instead, they waited until Antioch fell, providing the Crusaders with protective walls inside, time to plan counterattacks against the oncoming army, and the ability to assess the optimal moment to strike their enemy; thus, they successfully reposessed momentum and repelled this army without it achieving anything.

4- Poor strategies employed, or rather, the absence of viable operational plans altogether. When the united forces that marched to fight the Crusaders after the capture of Antioch had the opportunity to engage the starving detachments sallying out from Antioch, Kerbogha refused, insisting instead on confronting the army in a full-scale pitched battle.

When the Crusader army assembled, numerous factors contributed to Kerbogha’s defeat. Similarly, the Fatimid armies that marched repeatedly under al-Afdhal to fight the Crusaders after the establishment of the Kingdom of Jerusalem lacked a clear plan. The dispatch of their army was akin to a military parade where al-Afdhal merely displayed his troops and weapons, without formulating necessary tactics, scouting the terrain for encampment or engagement, gathering intelligence on enemy movements through spies or local Arab populations, or attempting military deception and operational secrecy.

On top of all that, he failed to employ the element of surprise—a tactic the Franks effectively leveraged against the Fatimids time and again. Compounding the situation, there was frequently no coordination among the various divisions of the army, and the Fatimid troops often encamped in exposed positions. Even when not exposed, they encamped too close to Frankish strongholds while awaiting further land or naval reinforcements. Consequently, intelligence reached the enemy, who launched surprise attacks against the large Fatimid army. Amidst the shock of the soldiers attempting to prepare for battle, the Franks shattered the Fatimid ranks, causing its forces to flee the field in disarray.

5- Failure to select competent leadership during that critical juncture. It is not enough for a commander to be a brave hero; he must possess the ability to unite the hearts of all soldiers under his command. Kerbogha, who rallied to fight the Crusaders occupying Antioch and succeeded in winning over several Levantine emirs who joined him with their forces,

ultimately failed to unite the hearts of the army’s commanders around him due to his arrogance and poor treatment of them. He alienated the other commanders who should have constituted his main strength. Ibn al-Athir described his conduct toward the emirs and troops, stating: “He angered the emirs and acted arrogantly toward them, believing they would remain with him despite this treatment, which enraged them.” This led them to abandon him and return to where they came from, causing his mission to end in failure.
