6. City rulers prioritizing personal ambitions over public interest, and the bargaining that took place between concerned parties for that purpose.

While the Crusaders were besieging Antioch, the Fatimids sent a delegation to meet the Crusader leaders, requesting that they be given a free hand in Palestine to recapture Jerusalem in exchange for leaving the Crusaders unhindered in remaining areas. The delegation returned believing it had achieved a diplomatic victory at the expense of its own people and kin, unaware that the Crusaders’ ambitions extended to Jerusalem, the whole of Palestine, and Egypt as well. This became clear shortly thereafter when the Crusaders advanced to occupy Jerusalem. Following that, the Fatimids dispatched successive armies to reclaim the territories occupied by the Crusaders, but all failed.

Personal ambitions were also evident in what transpired between Kerbogha and Shams ad-Daulah bin Yaghi-Siyan. Shams ad-Daulah came to Kerbogha following the death of his father and the Crusaders’ capture of the city of Antioch (excluding its citadel), seeking aid. Kerbogha responded to his request, saying: “If you wish for me to truly aid you and work in earnest to save you from this danger, then surrender this citadel to me, and you will see what service I render you. I will place it under the guard of my men.”

Shams ad-Daulah replied: “If you manage to eliminate all the Franks and hand their heads to me, I will surrender the citadel to you and become your subject. At that point, consider the citadel among your possessions.” However, Kerbogha told him: “No, it is not as you say; rather, everything depends on your surrendering the citadel to me now.” Ultimately, whether willingly or reluctantly, Shams ad-Daulah surrendered the citadel to Kerbogha.

Worse still, some Turkish emirs dared to sell cities outright to the Crusaders.

Baldwin purchased the city of Samosata (Samsat), a famous Islamic frontier stronghold, from its Turkish emir for ten thousand dinars 1.

7. The Crusaders’ exploitation of regional fragmentation

This became apparent in their communication with small independent powers in several Levantine cities such as Homs, Tripoli, and Shaizar, promising not to attack them if they provided assistance to the Franks. They received favorable responses, including from the Banu Munqidh in Shaizar. They sent envoys to Raymond to declare their desire for peace, offering to share part of their wealth, serve pilgrims comfortably, and swearing by their religion to uphold this. They pledged that no harm would come to him or his troops within their borders, confirming that they would willingly supply provisions needed for horses and men 2.

Similarly, Fakhr al-Mulk bin ‘Ammar, emir of Tripoli, sent an envoy to Raymond seeking peace, agreement, and friendly ties, sending him ten horses, four mules, and some money. The Count grew greedy and declared he would only accept peace if bin ‘Ammar embraced Christianity 3. However, he eventually accepted peace after bin ‘Ammar released over three hundred captive Christian pilgrims, paid fifteen thousand gold pieces, gave fifteen valuable gifts, and provided large supplies of horses, donkeys, and various crops. Among the agreement terms was that bin ‘Ammar would convert to Christianity and receive his land back from them if they defeated the Caliph of Egypt in the planned war and captured Jerusalem 4.

Janah ad-Daulah bin Mula’ib, ruler of Homs, acted similarly, as did the emir of Marqab, who signed a treaty with the Crusaders and allowed them into the city 5.
