A Contemporary View of the First Crusade (Part Two)

He further added an explanation regarding the connection between the science of history and politics, and the politician’s need for history, saying: “History is past politics, and politics is present history. Thus, the subject matter of history and politics is one. Both are based on uncertain facts, and both attempt to reach the hidden motives behind the doubtful veils of events.” 1
He also views that history grants us a correct perception of what is to come based on what has passed, saying: “History—meaning it—can be utilized in broadening horizons, habituating people to fairness in judgment, and placing individuals and events in their proper positions on the stage of public affairs. History is indeed worthy of granting a correct perception of what is temporary and fleeting in comparison to what is eternal and abiding in human life…” 2
Thus, it can be said that a large number of scholars have recognized the great benefits that man can enjoy from understanding history. So why do we not benefit from it now and make it a lesson, an admonition, and a repository of past experience? When we speak of political and military history, and internal and external clashes, this does not mean we only wish to depict fragmentation, fighting, and conflict, but rather we wish to understand what lies between the lines, and we wish to draw lessons from it.
And if history has this benefit, and if man must benefit from his experiences and lessons, and nations must benefit from their experiences and the experiences of others—meaning benefiting from history in general, which is a record of past events—there is no objection to our studying a part of the political history of the Levant (Sham) and projecting it onto its present. Through our understanding of our history, let us avoid what can be avoided, and comprehend the policies and goals of nations.
This study of the conditions of the Levant (Sham) in the period preceding the First Crusade—conditions that played a major role in the success of this campaign in achieving its goals—will be projected onto the conditions of the Levant before or during the First World War, which were the conditions that enabled the Jews to establish a national home for themselves in Palestine. With the emphasis that the Arabs, who managed to drive away the nightmare of these Frankish occupiers known as the Crusaders, are fully capable of driving away the spectre of the Zionists in the present era. All we must do is prepare for ourselves an atmosphere similar to that created by our leaders whom we cherish, taking pride in the service they rendered us in expelling the Crusader invaders who settled in our land, plundered our wealth, and killed our children—precisely as the Zionists are doing today. Those heroes such as Nur al-Din Zanki, Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi, al-Zahir Baybars, and other Muslim heroes who resisted and made immense sacrifices to achieve their noble goals that they set before their eyes.
