Another Example Cited by Dr. Hasan Habashi

Another example is cited by Dr. Hasan Habashi, who states: “As for Peter, he stayed for some time in Cologne, and his stay proved beneficial to him. A vast crowd of Germans joined him, with whom he marched across the Danube until he reached the land of Hungary, traversing it safely until reaching the city of Semlin. However, a trivial incident occurred that led to a battle between Peter’s crowd and the local inhabitants…” 1

Numerous Examples Indicating Non-Religious Motives

Examples such as these are numerous and far too many to count. I shall limit myself to these instances, for what has been presented serves as sufficient proof that those who set out in the name of the cross did not hold religious goals as their primary aim. Rather, these motives served as a veil to achieve far more vital and pressing interests, foremost among them being economic interests.

The commercial activities of Arab Muslims had long disturbed the Italian republics, which sought to monopolize the Mediterranean Sea for themselves. The Genoese and Pisans had previously cooperated in fighting the Arabs in Sicily in 407 AH / 1016 CE. Later, the Pisans advanced upon the city of Bone in 425 AH / 1034 CE, and at the instigation of Pope Victor III, launched an attack on Tunisia in 480 AH / 1087 CE, resulting in the fall of Mahdia into their hands. Meanwhile, the Normans worked to capture the island of Malta in 483 AH / 1091 CE 2.

In truth, religious aspects were merely a pretext for legitimacy. The wars were characterized by a drive to eliminate Islamic powers as an effective force shaping affairs in the Levant. They focused on seizing parts of the Arab East within a framework where everything in the region functioned to serve European purposes 3.

Beyond Economic and Religious Motives: What Else?

If religious reasons were not everything in the Crusades and economic motives surpassed them in importance, what were the other drivers behind these wars?

Political causes played a major role. The Papacy capitalized on the power vacuum resulting from the defeat of the Byzantines at the Battle of Manzikert in 463 AH / 1071 CE, due to the Seljuk advance into Byzantine territories and the Byzantines’ inability to stem their tide. Thus, Western Europe saw an opportunity to step in to defend this region and its European pilgrims by occupying the Levant 4.

The Popes also worked to redirect European knights toward fighting Muslims rather than engaging in internal conflicts. This strategy had already been applied in the Christian-Muslim conflicts in Spain and Mediterranean islands. Moreover, the Popes viewed the Crusades as an opportunity to divert the Norman threat away from Sicily and Southern Italy toward a distant, far-off arena 5.

And More Important Than All That: The Pope’s Desire to Unite the Two Churches

Most important of all was the Pope’s desire to unite the Eastern (Orthodox) and Western (Catholic) Churches under his papal authority. The Battle of Manzikert served as the spark heralding this rapprochement. Ever since that battle, Byzantine emperors continuously appealed for urgent aid from the Papacy against the Seljuk Muslims.

For instance, Emperor Michael VII (463–472 AH / 1071–1079 CE) urged Pope Gregory VII (465–478 AH / 1073–1085 CE) to send immediate aid to save the Byzantine Empire and its lands in Asia Minor. In return, Michael promised to repay the Papacy by working to heal the schism between the Eastern and Western Churches 5.

However, during this period, the Papacy became consumed by its own internal troubles, leaving the Byzantine Empire to stand alone against the Seljuk threat.

Later, Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos (474–512 AH / 1080–1118 CE) resumed the appeals to the Papacy after realizing he lacked the capacity to face the Seljuks alone. To halt their assaults on his territories, he felt compelled to invite Pope Urban II (481–493 AH / 1088–1099 CE) to save Christianity and protect the holy places 6.
