As for social factors, they were no less important than political and economic ones. The vast majority of the lower classes in European society lived lives filled with misery and hardship under the feudal system. Epidemics and famines spread widely among them, caused by the harsh conditions experienced by peasants in Western Europe during that period. Much agricultural land was devastated by barbarian raids, leading to food shortages at a time when the population was growing. The situation was worsened by wars and conflicts among feudal lords, in addition to natural and economic disasters that afflicted the European West at the time. Consequently, people in the region lived in poverty, deprivation, and fear.

These conditions drove them to participate in the Crusades; there was no reason to fear death or fighting Muslims when they were already living in a state akin to death itself. Rather than dying of starvation in his homeland burdened with a lifetime of sins, it was better for a man to die in a holy war that promised forgiveness of sins and entry into Paradise. This motivated many to join the Crusades. Alongside them, some nobles and knights sought participation to satisfy the spirit of adventure that dominated their public and private lives.

Preparations for the First Crusade

Pope Urban II differed from his predecessors in his personal qualities of boldness, foresight, and ability to select and influence men. In addition, he possessed a strong desire to unite the Eastern and Western Churches under his leadership. Thus, he convened the Council of Clermont in Dhu al-Qa’dah 488 AH / November 1095 CE, attended by nobles from various parts of Europe with diverse interests, as well as numerous clergy members. The Pope rose to ignite the enthusiasm of the attendees to fight the Muslims, utilizing his emotive rhetoric and playing upon both material and religious interests.

He pointed to the riches available in the lands of the infidels (meaning the Muslims) in the East for poor Christian knights. Others delivered speeches in the same impassioned tone, supporting the Pope on the necessity of directing a crusade to the East. The idea fell on receptive ears, and the gathered assembly grew enthusiastic, agreeing to launch the war and chanting the phrase, “Deus vult” (God wills it).

The attendees promptly adopted the cross as their emblem, which led to these wars being called the “Crusades” and their participants “Crusaders”. The year 489 AH / 1096–1097 CE was set as the departure date for the Crusaders, with Constantinople designated as the assembly point for their various groups to arrange the attack plan against Asia Minor and the Levant (Sham).

The Pope did not stop there; he traveled among European cities preaching the crusade. He achieved immense success as a number of nobles joined, particularly from French provinces, along with securing support from the city of Genoa. These forces formed the core of the First Crusade.
