The First Crusade consisted of two sections: the first comprised the common people, while the second included the princes. The People’s Crusade was led by Peter the Hermit alongside another leader named Walter. A massive crowd of followers assembled for both groups, totaling approximately fifteen thousand, some bringing their wives and children, taking the overland route through Hungary and then Byzantine territories. Although these people claimed to set out to protect Christians, they committed a terrible massacre in Hungary, killing around four thousand innocent Christians themselves, alongside looting and plundering everything that fell into their hands.
The Byzantine Emperor and his people quickly felt immense disappointment; after requesting organized military armies from the Papacy and the West to help repel the Seljuk threat, they were suddenly surprised by the arrival of mobs of rabble attacking peaceful citizens of the Empire and plundering their possessions. Facing this new danger, the Byzantine Emperor hurried to transport those Crusader crowds to Asia Minor so as not to allow them to wreak havoc in his capital. It was not expected that those commoners, ignorant of warfare tactics and weapons usage, could stand against the Seljuks, who wiped them out and turned them into a massive pile of remains. This occurred near Nicaea in the year 489 AH / October 1096 CE. 1
As for the official branch of the First Crusade—namely the Princes’ Crusade—it was well prepared, consisting of multiple groups, each with its own distinctive character that accompanied it from the outset and characterized its activities in the East. In other words, the feudal spirit was clearly evident in its official branch. Its leadership was assumed by a number of princes, each with his own orientations, troops, and policies. They were overwhelmingly from the Latin sector, with only a few from the German sector.
Those heading east formed three major groups: the first led by Godfrey of Bouillon accompanied by his brother Baldwin, both knights of Lorraine; the second led by Bohemond and his nephew Tancred, both Normans; and the third led by Raymond of Toulouse, known as Raymond IV, a knight from the Provençal region, accompanied by Bishop Adhemar as the Papal legate representing the Papacy in the leadership of the Crusaders in the East, alongside other leaders. These three groups assembled in Constantinople.
The Crusader forces gathered on the Bosphorus in immense numbers, estimated by various historians between sixty thousand and one hundred thousand. These forces were not limited to infantry, knights, archers, and laborers needed for battle and its preparation, but extended to a sizable population of women, children, the elderly, priests, bishops, and even women brought for reasons entirely unrelated to fighting. Thus, it closely resembled a popular migration resolved to settle by force of arms as colonial communities in Palestine and neighboring lands, akin to modern Jewish migrations to Palestine. 2
All leaders of the First Crusade, with the exception of Raymond and Tancred, swore an oath of fealty and allegiance to Byzantine Emperor Alexios Komnenos, pledging to restore to him all former Byzantine possessions they could recapture from the Seljuks, from Nicaea to Antioch. In return, the Byzantine Emperor pledged to assist the Crusaders in their mission with all his power, to provide them with provisions, and to contribute to the Crusade by supplying land and naval contingents from his army if he were unable to accompany them in person.
