Question:

My question is: What is required in order to touch the mushaf? What is the difference between taharah and wudu? Is wudu not required for touching the mushaf, with taharah alone being sufficient? Thank you.

Answer:

All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his Companions. To proceed:

A disbeliever is not permitted to touch the mushaf because of impurity in belief, as Allah Most High says:

“Indeed, the polytheists are impure, so let them not approach al-Masjid al-Haram after this year of theirs.” (Surah at-Tawbah, verse 28).

Thus, they are not to be permitted to enter the Haram because of its honor and purity. Likewise, they are not to be permitted to touch the mushaf, for it is even greater and more honorable. Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated from Ibn ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, that he said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade traveling with the mushaf to enemy territory.”

It is also not permissible for a Muslim who is in a state of ritual impurity to touch the mushaf, whether the impurity is major or minor, based on the statement of Allah Most High:

“None touch it except the purified.” (Surah al-Waqi’ah, verse 79).

Ibn Hibban narrated in his Sahih, and al-Hakim in al-Mustadrak, among others, that the letter of the Prophet ﷺ to the people of Yemen contained the words:

“No one should touch the Qur’an except one who is pure.”

Al-Mubarakfuri quoted al-Hafiz Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr as saying: “It is a well-known letter among the scholars of biography and is recognized by the people of knowledge to such a degree that, because of its fame, there is no need to mention its chain of transmission, for it resembles a mutawatir report due to the people’s acceptance of it…”

Thus, the verse and the hadith, in their general wording, indicate that no one should touch the Qur’an except one who is pure. This includes purity from disbelief, purity from ritual impurity whether major or minor, and purity from physical impurity. The difference between major and minor ritual impurity is that major impurity requires ghusl, while minor impurity requires wudu.

The difference between taharah and wudu is that taharah is the broader term, while wudu is only one form of minor purification.

And Allah knows best.
