Question:

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله

Assalamu’alaikum wa rahmatullah.

كنت في صلاة فقرأ الإمام (أم كنتم شهداء إذ حضر يعقوب الموت) – بفتح التاء في الموت- فصححت له ثم بعد الصلاة اعترض علي فقلت إن اللحن إذا أخل بالمعنى فإنه تبديل لكلام الله وهو تعالى القائل (لا مبدل لكلماته) الآية فهل فعلي صحيح؟

I was praying when the imam recited the verse “أم كنتم شهداء إذ حضر يعقوب الموت”, pronouncing the word al-mawt with a fathah on the letter ta’ (الموتَ). I corrected him, but after the prayer he objected to what I had done. I told him that if an error in recitation (lahn) alters the meaning, then it amounts to changing the words of Allah, while Allah says: “La mubaddila li kalimatih” — “There is no one who can change His words.” Was what I did correct?

أرجو الإجابة مع عرض أقوال أهل العلم.

Answer:

الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله، وعلى آله وصحبه، أما بعد:

All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his Companions. To proceed:

فإن نصيحتك لهذا الإمام فعلٌ تثاب عليه إن شاء الله، لقول النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم:

Your advice to this imam is an action for which, Insha Allah, you will be rewarded, based on the saying of the Prophet ﷺ:

“الدين النصيحة، قلنا: لمن يا رسول الله؟ قال: لله، ولكتابه، ولرسوله، ولأئمة المسلمين وعامتهم” رواه مسلم،

“Religion is sincere advice.” We asked: “To whom, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “To Allah, His Book, His Messenger, the leaders of the Muslims, and their common people.” (Narrated by Imam Muslim).

وتصحيح خطأ القارئ من النصيحة لكتاب الله تعالى، ومن النصيحة للقارئ نفسه.

Correcting a reciter’s mistake is part of sincere advice toward the Book of Allah Most High and toward the reciter himself.

وأما عن حكم صلاة الإمام والمأموم في هذه الحالة، وهي الخطأ في الإعراب في غير الفاتحة، فجمهور العلماء يقولون بصحة صلاتهما، ونظراً لطلبك عرض أقوال العلماء في ذلك فسنعرضها لك باختصار:

As for the ruling on the prayer of the imam and the follower in this situation — namely, an error in grammatical inflection in a passage other than al-Fatihah — the majority of scholars hold that both prayers remain valid. Since you requested the views of the scholars, we will present them briefly:

أما الحنفية، فالمتقدمون منهم على بطلان صلاة الإمام والمأموم، إذا كان تغيير الإعراب يؤدي إلى معنىً كفري، وذهب المتأخرون إلى صحة الصلاة، لو أدى إلى معنى كفري، لأن أكثر الناس لا يميزون بين وجوه الإعراب، هذا إن كان على سبيل الخطأ، أما إن كان عامداً، فصلاته باطلة قطعاً.

According to the Hanafis, their earlier scholars held that the prayer of both the imam and the follower becomes invalid if an error in grammatical inflection produces a meaning of disbelief. Their later scholars, however, held that the prayer remains valid even if the altered wording produces such a meaning, because most people are unable to distinguish between the various grammatical forms. This applies when the error is unintentional. If it is done deliberately, then the prayer is unquestionably invalid.

وأما المالكية، فالصلاة عندهم صحيحة مطلقاً، إلا إذا كان عامداً، فصلاته باطلة، ولكنهم يشترطون في غير العامد أربعة شروط لصحة صلاته، وهي:

According to the Malikis, the prayer is valid in general unless the error is deliberate, in which case the prayer is invalid. However, for an unintentional error, they stipulate four conditions for the validity of the prayer:

١- أن يكون عاجزاً عن التعلم لضيق الوقت.
٢- ألا يجد معلماً يعلمه.
٣- ألا يوجد غيره يؤم الناس.
٤- أن يكون المأموم مثله، أو أقل منه في العلم بالقراءة.

  1. He is unable to learn because of limited time.
  2. He cannot find a teacher to teach him.
  3. There is no one else available to lead the people in prayer.
  4. The follower is at the same level as him, or less knowledgeable than him in Qur’an recitation.

فإن تخلف شرط من هذه الشروط، فصلاته باطلة.

If any one of these conditions is not fulfilled, then his prayer is invalid.

وإنما قالوا بصحة صلاة المخطئ دون العامد، لأن القارئ المخطئ لا يقصد ما يقتضيه اللحن، بل يعتقد بقراءته ما يعتقد بها من لا يلحن فيها.

They distinguished between an accidental mistake and a deliberate one because the reciter who errs does not intend the meaning produced by the mistake. Rather, he intends the same meaning as a person who recites the verse correctly.

وأما الشافعية، فالصلاة عندهم صحيحة، ولو كان لحنه يُغير المعنى، هذا إذا كان غير قادرٍ على التعلم أو كان مخطئاً، أما إذا قدر على التعلم أو تعمد اللحن فصلاته باطلة.

According to the Shafi’is, the prayer remains valid even if the recitation error changes the meaning, provided that the person is unable to learn or that the error was unintentional. If he is able to learn or deliberately commits the error, then his prayer is invalid.

قال في روضة الطالب: فإن لحن في غير ذلك لحناً يغير المعنى، كقوله: (أن الله بريء من المشركين ورسوله) بجر اللام، فإن كان قادراً عامداً بطلت صلاته، وإلا فتصح صلاته والقدوة به، لأن ترك السورة جائز. ا.هـ.

It is stated in Rawdat at-Talib: If a person makes an error in a passage other than that which changes the meaning, such as pronouncing “وَرَسُولِهِ” with kasrah, thereby producing the meaning “and from His Messenger,” whereas it should be mansub as maf’ul ma’ahu, then if he is capable of correcting it and deliberately recites it that way, his prayer is invalid. Otherwise, his prayer is valid and it is permissible to pray behind him, because reciting a surah after al-Fatihah is not obligatory.

وأما الحنابلة، فالصلاة عندهم صحيحة أيضاً، إن كان الإمام مخطئاً، أما إذا تعمد فصلاته باطلة هو ومن اقتدى به.

According to the Hanbalis, the prayer is likewise valid if the imam makes the error unintentionally. If he does so deliberately, then both his prayer and the prayer of those following him are invalid.

قال ابن قدامة: فإن أحال المعنى في غير الفاتحة، لم يمنع صحة الصلاة ولا الائتمام به، إلا أن يتعمده فتبطل صلاتهما. ا.هـ.

Ibn Qudamah said: If a person changes the meaning in a passage other than al-Fatihah, this does not invalidate the prayer nor prevent others from praying behind him, unless he does so deliberately, in which case the prayer of both the imam and the follower becomes invalid.

والله أعلم.

And Allah knows best.
