Question:
I recite Surah al-Baqarah almost every day, but I become distracted very often. I pass through pages without reflecting upon them or keeping my mind focused on the recitation. Is reciting in this manner still beneficial?

Answer:
All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his Companions. To proceed:
Reflecting upon the Qur’an while reciting it is strongly emphasized in the Shari’ah, because tadabbur is the means by which the intended meanings of the verses are understood, and it is one of the purposes for which the Qur’an was revealed. Allah Most High says:
كِتَابٌ أَنْزَلْنَاهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَارَكٌ لِيَدَّبَّرُوا آيَاتِهِ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُولُو الْأَلْبَابِ {صّ:٢٩}
“This is a blessed Book which We have revealed to you so that they may reflect upon its verses and so that people of understanding may take heed.” (Surah Sad, verse 29)
وقال تعالى: أَفَلا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ الْقُرْآنَ أَمْ عَلَى قُلُوبٍ أَقْفَالُهَا {محمد:٢٤}
And He also says: “Do they not then reflect upon the Qur’an, or are there locks upon their hearts?” (Surah Muhammad, verse 24).
However, whoever recites something from the Qur’an without reflecting upon it still receives the reward of recitation, based on the general meaning of the hadith narrated by at-Tirmidhi:
“Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah will have one good deed…”
This general wording includes the one who recites without tadabbur, as well as the one who does not understand the language in which the Qur’an was revealed.
Nevertheless, tadabbur remains extremely important, and whoever is able to practice it should be diligent in doing so. Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said in Miftah Dar as-Sa’adah:
“Nothing is more beneficial to the heart than reciting the Qur’an with reflection and contemplation, for it encompasses all the spiritual stations of those journeying to Allah. If people knew what lies in reciting the Qur’an with tadabbur, they would occupy themselves with it to the exclusion of everything else…”
Reciting a single verse with reflection and understanding is better than completing the entire Qur’an without tadabbur or comprehension. It is more beneficial to the heart, more conducive to attaining faith, and more likely to let one taste the sweetness of the Qur’an. This was the practice of the Salaf, some of whom would repeat a single verse until morning.
Reciting the Qur’an with reflection is a fundamental means of rectifying the heart. For this reason, Ibn Mas’ud said:
“Do not rush through the Qur’an as poetry is rushed through, and do not scatter it as inferior dates are scattered. Pause at its wonders, stir the hearts with it, and let not the concern of any one of you be merely to reach the end of the surah.”
Abu Ayyub narrated from Abu Hamzah that he said to Ibn ‘Abbas: “I recite quickly; I can complete the Qur’an in three days.” Ibn ‘Abbas replied:
“For me to recite one surah of the Qur’an in a single night, reflecting upon it and reciting it with tartil, is more beloved to me than reciting the Qur’an in the manner that you recite it.”
