Question:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim.

When memorizing the Qur’an and reviewing what has been memorized, the recitation is often done quickly because the same verse or word is repeated many times. As a result, the recitation becomes rapid and repetitive, which may lead to failing to give the letters their proper pronunciation and to errors in the rules of tajwid. This happens to people when memorizing and reviewing the Qur’an. My question is: With this type of recitation specifically used for memorization and review, does the reciter still receive the reward of ten good deeds for each letter or not?

Answer:

الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله، وعلى آله وصحبه، أما بعد:

All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his Companions. To proceed:

فإن كان قارئ القرآن مخلصا في قراءته وقرأ بالحدر وهو سرعة القراءة ولم تؤد سرعته لهذرمة تخل بنطق الحروف أو تغير حركاتها ولم يترك المد والغنة، فإنا نرجو أن يعطيه الله الأجر، وإن كان فرط في ذلك فإنه آثم، لقول محقق هذا الفن محمد بن الجزري:

If the reciter of the Qur’an is sincere in his recitation and recites in the manner of hadr, meaning rapid recitation, without his speed turning into hadharmah — excessively hurried recitation that compromises the proper pronunciation of the letters or alters their vowel markings — and without neglecting madd or ghunnah, then we hope that Allah will grant him the reward. However, if he is negligent concerning these matters, then he is sinful, in accordance with the words of Muhammad ibn al-Jazari, the leading authority in this field:

والأخذ بالتجويد حتم لازم من لم يجود القرآن آثم

“Adhering to tajwid is a binding obligation; whoever does not properly recite the Qur’an with tajwid is sinful.”

وقد سبقت لنا فتاوى في حكم التجويد، وبيان ما يجوز في السرعة، فراجع الفتاوى التالية هنا

We have previously issued fatwas concerning the ruling on tajwid and explaining what degree of speed in recitation is permissible. Please refer to the following fatwas:

والله أعلم.

And Allah knows best.
