Question:
Assalamu’alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. My dear brothers, I try to recite Surah ad-Dukhan in every ‘Isha prayer because it is said that seventy thousand angels will seek forgiveness for you by morning. I also try to recite Surah ar-Rahman in every Fajr prayer because it is described as the bride of the Qur’an. However, my soul that inclines toward evil has made me wonder whether this practice might be a bid’ah. Is that indeed the case? May Allah reward you with all goodness.

Answer:
All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his Companions. To proceed:
The hadiths encouraging the recitation of Surah ad-Dukhan are all weak. Among the most well-known of them is:
“Whoever recites Surah ad-Dukhan on Friday night will wake up having been forgiven.”
This hadith was narrated by at-Tirmidhi and was included by Ibn al-Jawzi in al-Mawdu’at. Another hadith referred to by the respected questioner is also found in at-Tirmidhi and was likewise judged weak by Ibn al-Jawzi. Since weak hadiths may be acted upon in matters concerning virtuous deeds under the well-known conditions, a person may recite the surah hoping for reward. However, making it a fixed practice in every ‘Isha prayer is not appropriate.
The Sunnah is for the worshipper to recite from different parts of the Qur’an without consistently restricting a particular prayer to a particular surah, with the exception of al-Fatihah. Moreover, the hadiths concerning Surah ad-Dukhan refer only to reciting the surah itself, not to reciting it specifically within a particular prayer.
Likewise, Surah ar-Rahman should not be made a fixed recitation in every Fajr prayer so that no other surah is ever recited. Rather, it should be recited at times and other surahs at other times. It is well known that the righteous early generations did not designate one particular surah for constant recitation to the exclusion of others unless it was authentically established that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do so. They were, after all, extremely diligent in seeking authentic means of earning reward.
And Allah knows best.
