I am a 22-year-old woman living in a foreign country. My problem is that when I recite the Qur’an, I find it difficult to understand what I am reading. Even when I read tafsir, I face the same difficulty. Do I still receive good deeds for reciting the Qur’an even though I do not understand what I am reading? What is the solution to my problem? Jazakumullahu khairan…

Answer:

All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his Companions. To proceed:

It is recommended to recite the Qur’an with tadabbur and understanding, because the greatest aim and most important objective is to understand its meanings and take heed from them. Through this, hearts are opened and illuminated.

Allah Most High says:

“This is a blessed Book which We have revealed to you so that they may reflect upon its verses and so that people of understanding may take heed.” (Surah Sad, verse 29)

And Allah, Glorified and Exalted, also says:

“Do they not then reflect upon the Qur’an, or are there locks upon their hearts?” (Surah Muhammad, verse 24)

Tadabbur of the Qur’an means reflecting upon the meanings of its words and verses, contemplating its commands and prohibitions, its stories and parables, and taking lessons from everything it contains. Every Muslim is required to reflect upon the Qur’an according to his or her knowledge and ability, as explained in another fatwa here:

Whoever misses out on reflecting upon the Qur’an has missed a great reward and tremendous benefit. Nevertheless, the reward for reciting the Qur’an is not lost; the person is still rewarded for the recitation itself.

Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, mentioned in Zad al-Ma’ad the difference of opinion among the scholars regarding which is better: reciting quickly and therefore reciting more, or reciting less while maintaining tartil and tadabbur. He answered:

“The correct view in this matter is that the reward for recitation with tartil and tadabbur is greater and higher in value, while the reward for abundant recitation is greater in number. The former is like someone who gives a precious jewel in charity or frees a slave of great value, while the latter is like someone who gives a large number of coins in charity or frees many slaves of lesser value.”

And Allah knows best.
