Question:

What is the ruling on congregational prayer if the imam pronounces the letter dhal as zay, such as saying “A’uz bi rabbin-nas” instead of “Qul a’udhu bi rabbin-nas”? Is the prayer valid?

Answer:

All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his Companions. To proceed:

A person who substitutes one letter for another — such as replacing ra’ with lam or ya’, replacing sin with tha’, jim, or shin, or replacing dhal with zay — should not lead anyone in prayer except someone whose recitation is at the same level. His own prayer is valid if he is unable to learn. However, if he is able to learn but does not do so, then his prayer is invalid.

If he leads someone who recites correctly, then the follower’s prayer is not valid because he is following someone whom it is not permissible for him to follow in prayer. What has been mentioned applies when the recitation error occurs in Surah al-Fatihah. As for an error outside al-Fatihah, Imam an-Nawawi said:

“If an error that changes the meaning occurs in a passage other than al-Fatihah, then his prayer and the prayer of everyone behind him are valid, because omitting the surah does not invalidate the prayer, and therefore such an error does not prevent others from following him.” (End quote from al-Majmu’).

Imam Ibn Qudamah, may Allah have mercy on him, also said:

“If the meaning is altered in a passage other than al-Fatihah, this does not invalidate the prayer nor prevent others from praying behind him, unless he does so deliberately, in which case both prayers become invalid.” (End quote).

And Allah knows best.
