Question:

I have a brother in faith, and the two of us used to recite the Qur’an and listen to each other’s recitation after the Fajr prayer, seeking only the pleasure of Allah. Neither of us has mastered the rules of tajwid very well, but we try to correct one another. We have now stopped doing this because we are afraid that our recitation may be incorrect and that we might incur sin instead of earning reward. Please advise us. May Allah benefit you and reward you with all goodness on our behalf.

Answer:

All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his Companions. To proceed:

It is obligatory to give proper care and attention to the recitation of the Qur’an. Allah Most High says:

“And it is a Qur’an which We have divided into parts so that you may recite it to the people gradually, and We have sent it down progressively.” (Surah al-Isra’, verse 106)

And Allah also says:

“And recite the Qur’an with measured recitation.” (Surah al-Muzzammil, verse 4).

The earlier scholars of qira’at and tajwid held that observing all the fundamental principles of tajwid is obligatory and that a person who neglects them, despite being able to observe them, is sinful. This applies both to matters concerning the proper preservation and pronunciation of letters — where errors may alter their form and corrupt the meaning — and to other matters discussed by the scholars of Qur’anic recitation in books of tajwid, such as idgham, madd, ghunnah, and similar rules.

Ibn al-Jazari, may Allah have mercy on him, narrated in his book an-Nashr from Nasr ash-Shirazi that he said:

“Proper performance is obligatory in Qur’an recitation, and the reciter must recite the Qur’an as it ought to be recited.”

He also said:

“There is no doubt that just as this Ummah is commanded to understand the meanings of the Qur’an and uphold its rulings, it is likewise commanded to correct its wording and articulate its letters according to the manner transmitted from the imams of Qur’anic recitation, whose transmission is connected to the Prophet ﷺ.”

There is no doubt that this is required, especially of one who is capable of doing so and is not prevented by non-Arab speech habits or a defect of the tongue.

Muhammad ibn al-Jazari said in al-Jazariyyah:

“Adhering to tajwid is a binding obligation; whoever does not properly recite the Qur’an with tajwid is sinful.”

Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Jazari, the son of the author, said in his commentary on at-Tayyibah: “That is obligatory for the one who is capable of it.”

As for lahn jali, the obvious errors that affect the form of a letter and its meaning, it is not permissible to recite with such errors. As for lahn khafi, subtle errors, not everyone is able to recognize or detect them. Therefore, ‘Ali al-Qari said:

“All of their rules should be observed as obligatory in matters where neglecting them changes the form of the word and corrupts the meaning, and as recommended in matters that beautify the wording or improve pronunciation during recitation.”

As for lahn khafi, he said that it cannot reasonably be considered an individual obligation for which every reciter would be punished, because that would involve great hardship.

Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, may Allah have mercy on him, said in Ihya’ ‘Ulum ad-Din:

“If a person makes frequent errors in reciting the Qur’an and is capable of learning, then he should refrain from reciting until he learns, for he is sinful in doing so. If his tongue does not cooperate with him and most of what he recites contains errors, then he should leave that recitation and strive to learn and correct al-Fatihah. If most of his recitation is correct but he is unable to perfect it completely, then there is no harm in his reciting. However, he should lower his voice so that others do not hear him. There is also a view that he should be prevented even from reciting quietly; nevertheless, if this is the utmost of his ability and he finds comfort in recitation and is eager to continue it, then I see no harm in it.”

Accordingly, if both of you are able to learn, then you must refrain from reciting the Qur’an with errors until you study under a shaykh or a student of knowledge and learn the Qur’an from him. If you cannot find a shaykh or student of knowledge, there are modern learning tools such as recordings, computers, and other means that, Insha Allah, can help you correct your recitation and learn the rules of tajwid.

Many hadiths are authentically reported from the Prophet ﷺ concerning the virtue of learning and memorizing the Qur’an. Among them is the hadith of ‘Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“The one who is proficient in the Qur’an will be with the noble and righteous messenger-angels, while the one who recites the Qur’an and stumbles over it because it is difficult for him will have two rewards.” (Narrated by Imam Muslim).

Imam an-Nawawi explained in his commentary on Sahih Muslim that al-Qadi ‘Iyad said: “The meaning of being with the angels may be that in the Hereafter he will attain stations in which he will be a companion of the messenger-angels because he shares their characteristic of carrying the Book of Allah Most High. It may also mean that he acts in accordance with their deeds…”

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

“The best among you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.” (Narrated by Imam al-Bukhari from ‘Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him).

And he ﷺ also informed us regarding the one who memorizes the Qur’an:

“A crown of honor will be placed upon the head of the one who has memorized the Qur’an on the Day of Resurrection.” (Narrated by Ahmad and ad-Darimi from ‘Abdullah bin Zayd).

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also said:

“It will be said to the reciter of the Qur’an on the Day of Resurrection: Recite, ascend, and recite with tartil, for your rank will be at the last verse you recite.” (Narrated by Ahmad and at-Tirmidhi from ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr).

And Allah knows best.
