Which surahs are known as the “Seven Saving Surahs”?

Answer:

All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his Companions. To proceed:

Indeed, the entire Noble Qur’an — all of its surahs and verses — is a healing for what is within the hearts, guidance and mercy for the believers, and a source of salvation for whoever holds firmly to it and follows its guidance.

We have not found any report from the Prophet ﷺ or from his noble Companions specifying seven particular surahs and calling them “the Saving Surahs,” although authentic, hasan, and weak hadiths have been narrated regarding the virtues of certain surahs and verses.

Among these are authentic reports concerning the virtue of Surah al-Fatihah and its use as ruqyah, what has been established concerning Surah al-Baqarah, Ali ‘Imran, Ayat al-Kursi, and the closing verses of Surah al-Baqarah. There are also authentic reports concerning the virtue of Surah al-Kahf and that memorizing its closing verses protects from the Dajjal, as well as reports concerning the virtue of Surah al-Mulk.

Some people have gathered eight particular surahs and given them the name “the Saving Surahs.” According to this claim, they are: al-Kahf, as-Sajdah, Yasin, Fussilat, ad-Dukhan, al-Waqi’ah, al-Hashr, and al-Mulk.

These surahs have appeared together in printed compilations under the title as-Suwar al-Munjiyat — “the Saving Surahs.” However, we have not found any basis for giving these surahs that designation.

Nevertheless, authentic hadiths have established the virtues of some of these surahs and mentioned certain special qualities. Among them is what at-Tirmidhi narrated and graded hasan, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said concerning Surah al-Mulk: “It is the protector, the savior; it saves from the punishment of the grave.”

In conclusion, we have not found any seven specific surahs that are authentically known as “the Seven Saving Surahs.” Likewise, there is no basis for calling the eight surahs mentioned above “the Saving Surahs,” although hadiths and reports have been narrated concerning the virtues of some of them.

And Allah knows best.
