Question:
I heard that all the hadiths concerning Surah al-Waqi’ah and its virtues are either weak or fabricated. Is this true? May Allah reward you with goodness.

Answer:
All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his Companions. To proceed:
Regarding the virtue of Surah al-Waqi’ah, one authentic hadith and one weak hadith have been reported.
As for the authentic hadith, it is the report narrated by at-Tirmidhi and al-Hakim from Ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Hud, al-Waqi’ah, al-Mursalat, ‘Amma Yatasa’alun, and Idha ash-Shamsu Kuwwirat have made me grow gray.”
Al-Albani graded this hadith authentic in Sahih al-Jami’. The Prophet ﷺ said this because these surahs contain powerful warnings concerning the punishment of the Hereafter and descriptions of Paradise.
As for the weak hadith, it is the report narrated by al-Bayhaqi from Ibn Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever recites Surah al-Waqi’ah every night will never be afflicted by poverty.”
This is a weak hadith. Al-Munawi said in Fayd al-Qadir: Its chain contains Abu Shuja’. It is stated in al-Mizan that he is an unknown narrator. This report was then cited through his narration from Ibn Mas’ud. Ibn al-Jawzi stated in al-‘Ilal that Ahmad said: “It is a munkar hadith.” Az-Zayla’i, following a number of scholars, stated that the hadith is defective in several respects:
- There is a break in its chain of transmission, as explained by ad-Daraqutni and others.
- Its text is munkar, as stated by Imam Ahmad.
- Its narrators are weak, as stated by Ibn al-Jawzi.
- There is inconsistency in its transmission.
Scholars including Imam Ahmad, Abu Hatim, his son, ad-Daraqutni, al-Bayhaqi, and others agreed that this hadith is weak.
And Allah knows best.
