Question:

It is mentioned in some hadiths that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regularly recited Surah Tabarak and Surah as-Sajdah. How authentic is this? What is the best time to recite them? What are their virtues, particularly the virtue of Surah as-Sajdah? Does the same apply to Surah al-Waqi’ah, Yasin, an-Naba’, and Nuh? May Allah reward you with goodness.

Answer:

All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his Companions. To proceed:

The noble Messenger ﷺ encouraged the recitation of the Qur’an and explained the immense reward for the one who recites it and acts upon it, with a good deed recorded for every letter. He also encouraged the recitation of certain verses and surahs because of their particular virtues, such as Ayat al-Kursi, the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah, Surah al-Ikhlas, Surah al-Kafirun, and other surahs for which specific virtues have been reported.

Among these is Surah Tabarak, meaning Surah al-Mulk. At-Tirmidhi narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Indeed, there is a surah in the Qur’an consisting of thirty verses that interceded for a man until he was forgiven. It is Surah ‘Tabarak alladhi bi-yadihi al-mulk.’”

Abu ‘Isa, meaning at-Tirmidhi, said: This is a hasan hadith. It was also narrated by Abu Dawud and others. It was also said concerning this surah:

“I wish that Tabarak alladhi bi-yadihi al-mulk were in the heart of every believer.” (Narrated by al-Hakim from Ibn ‘Abbas)

Among the reports concerning the virtue of Surah Tabarak together with Surah as-Sajdah is what Ahmad and at-Tirmidhi narrated from Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not sleep until he had recited Alif Lam Mim Tanzil, meaning Surah as-Sajdah, and Tabarak alladhi bi-yadihi al-mulk, meaning Surah al-Mulk. This is an authentic hadith, graded sahih by more than one of the leading scholars, including Shaykh al-Albani in Sahih al-Jami’, no. 4873. Therefore, it is recommended to recite both surahs every night before sleeping, following the practice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

As for Surah al-Waqi’ah and Surah an-Naba’, their virtues are mentioned in the hadith narrated by at-Tirmidhi from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said that Abu Bakr said: “O Messenger of Allah, you have grown gray.” He replied:

“Hud, al-Waqi’ah, al-Mursalat, ‘Amma Yatasa’alun (an-Naba’), and Idha ash-Shamsu Kuwwirat have made me grow gray.”

At-Tirmidhi said: This is a hasan gharib hadith. It was also graded authentic by as-Suyuti and Shaykh al-Albani in Sahih al-Jami’, no. 3723.

As for Surah Yasin and Surah Nuh, to the best of our knowledge, no authentic report has been established concerning any particular virtue specific to either of them.

And Allah knows best.
