Question:

What are the seven saving surahs of the Qur’an? And what is the reward for reciting each of them? I have heard that they include Surah ad-Dukhan, al-Mulk, ar-Rahman, al-Waqi’ah, and Yasin, but I am not sure about the others. Please explain this in detail if possible. Thank you.

Answer:

All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his Companions. To proceed:

We have not found any authentic evidence establishing what the questioner has mentioned.

At-Tirmidhi narrated — and said that it is hasan gharib through this route — from Ibn ‘Abbas that one of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ pitched his tent over a grave without realizing that it was a grave. He then heard a person inside reciting Surah Tabarak alladhi bi-yadihi al-mulk until he completed it. He went to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of Allah, I pitched my tent over a grave without realizing that it was a grave, and there was a person inside reciting Surah Tabarak until he completed it.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“It is the protector; it is the savior. It saves him from the punishment of the grave.”

In the chain of this hadith is Yahya bin ‘Amr bin Malik. Ahmad bin Hanbal said of him: “He is nothing.” Yahya bin Ma’in declared him weak, while Hammad bin Zayd accused him of lying.

Ad-Darimi narrated from Khalid bin Ma’dan that he said: “Recite the saving surah, namely Alif Lam Mim Tanzil” — meaning Surah as-Sajdah. He also said the same regarding Surah Tabarak, meaning al-Mulk, and he would not spend the night without reciting both of them.

Khalid bin Ma’dan was a Tabi’i. In the chain leading to him is ‘Abdah, his daughter, and no one declared her trustworthy except Ibn Hibban.

In Musnad Ahmad and at-Tirmidhi, and authenticated by al-Hakim from Jabir bin ‘Abdillah, may Allah be pleased with him, it is reported that the Prophet ﷺ would not sleep until he had recited Surah as-Sajdah and Surah al-Mulk.

It should be understood that the entire Qur’an is a source of salvation for the one who recites it and acts upon it, protecting him from the punishment of the grave, the Fire, and various dangers.

A number of hadiths and reports have been narrated concerning the virtues of the surahs mentioned in the question. Regarding Surah Yasin, Abu Ya’la narrated with a good chain — as Ibn Kathir stated — from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Whoever recites Yasin at night will wake up forgiven, and whoever recites Ha Mim in which ad-Dukhan is mentioned will wake up forgiven.”

Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, and Ahmad narrated from Ma’qil bin Yasar that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Recite Yasin over those among you who are dying.”

This refers to the state of dying. Ibn Kathir, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “For this reason, some scholars have said that among the special qualities of this surah is that it is not recited at a difficult matter except that Allah Most High makes it easy. It is as though its recitation beside the dying person is intended for mercy to descend and for the departure of the soul to be made easier.” End quote.

Many hadiths have been narrated regarding the virtues of Surah Yasin, but most of them are not authentic, such as the hadith:

“Everything has a heart, and the heart of the Qur’an is Yasin. Whoever recites Yasin, Allah will record for him the reward of reciting the Qur’an ten times.”

At-Tirmidhi narrated this hadith and said that it is gharib. Its chain contains an unknown narrator, Harun Abu Muhammad.

Regarding Surah al-Mulk, at-Tirmidhi narrated it and graded it hasan, and Ahmad also narrated from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Indeed, there is a surah in the Qur’an consisting of thirty verses that interceded for a man until he was forgiven. It is Surah Tabarak alladhi bi-yadihi al-mulk.”

Regarding Surah al-Waqi’ah, al-Bayhaqi and Abu Ya’la narrated with a weak chain from Ibn Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Whoever recites Surah al-Waqi’ah every night will never be afflicted by poverty.”

Ibn Mas’ud used to instruct his daughters to recite it every night.

As for Surah ar-Rahman, several weak hadiths have been narrated concerning its virtues. Among them is the report narrated by al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Iman from ‘Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:

“Everything has a bride, and the bride of the Qur’an is ar-Rahman.”

Al-Bayhaqi also narrated from Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“The one who recites al-Hadid, Idha Waqa’at al-Waqi’ah, and ar-Rahman will be called in the dominion of the heavens and the earth: an inhabitant of al-Firdaws.”

Both hadiths have weak chains of transmission, as Shaykh al-Albani, may Allah have mercy on him, explained. See another fatwa here:

And Allah knows best.
