Question:

I read in a hadith that reciting these surahs every night carries certain virtues. Is what I read authentic? For example, if a person recites the last three verses of Surah al-Hashr, seventy thousand angels will pray for him from morning until evening and from evening until morning, and if he dies in that state, he will die as a martyr.

I do not know the particular virtues of Surah ar-Rahman. As for Surah al-Waqi’ah, it is said that whoever recites it will not face poverty or hardship.

Whoever recites Surah ad-Dukhan will have seventy thousand angels seek forgiveness for him.

Regarding Surah Fussilat, it is said that whoever wishes to enter Paradise — al-Firdaws — and walk through its gardens should recite the Hawamim surahs.

It is also said that Surah Yasin intercedes for the one who recites it and for the one who listens to it. As for Surah as-Sajdah, if a person is sinful and recites this surah, then even if all his deeds are placed before him, will the surah seek forgiveness for him?

Answer:

All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his Companions. To proceed:

As for the surahs you have asked about, some of their virtues are established through authentic hadiths, some are mentioned only in weak hadiths, while for others no relevant hadith has been found at all. The details are as follows:

Surah as-Sajdah: Imam Ahmad and at-Tirmidhi narrated from Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet ﷺ would not sleep until he had recited Alif Lam Mim Tanzil and Tabarak alladhi bi-yadihi al-mulk.

Al-Albani graded this hadith authentic in Sahih al-Jami’, no. 4873. This practice indicates the virtue of these two surahs. As for the particular virtue you mentioned concerning Surah as-Sajdah, it is not established in any reliable hadith.

Surah al-Waqi’ah: Among what has been narrated regarding its virtue is the report of at-Tirmidhi from Ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said that Abu Bakr said: “O Messenger of Allah, you have grown gray.” The Messenger of Allah replied:

“Hud, al-Waqi’ah, al-Mursalat, ‘Amma Yatasa’alun, and Idha ash-Shamsu Kuwwirat have made me grow gray.”

Al-Albani graded this hadith authentic in Sahih al-Jami’, no. 3723.

As for the hadith you mentioned, its wording is:

“Whoever recites Surah al-Waqi’ah every night will never be afflicted by poverty.” It was narrated by al-Bayhaqi from Ibn Mas’ud.

However, this hadith is weak. Al-Albani graded it weak in Da’if al-Jami’.

Surah Yasin: A weak hadith has been narrated concerning its virtue. Al-Bayhaqi narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever recites Yasin once, it is as though he has recited the Qur’an ten times.”

Al-Albani graded this hadith weak.

Abu Nu’aym also narrated in Hilyat al-Awliya’ from Ibn Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever recites Yasin every night will be forgiven.”

This hadith is also weak according to al-Albani. Other reports concerning the virtues of this surah are likewise either weak or fabricated.

As for Surah ad-Dukhan, all that has been narrated concerning its specific virtues is either very weak or fabricated. An example is the report narrated by at-Tirmidhi from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him:

“Whoever recites (Ha Mim ad-Dukhan) at night will wake in the morning with seventy thousand angels seeking forgiveness for him.”

Al-Albani classified it as fabricated (mawdu’).

As for the Hawamim surahs, to the best of our knowledge no authentic hadith has been narrated regarding the special virtue of reciting them. However, at-Tirmidhi narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever recites (Ha Mim al-Mu’min) — Surah Ghafir — up to the words (إليه المصير), together with Ayat al-Kursi in the morning, will be protected by them until evening; and whoever recites them in the evening will be protected until morning.”

Al-Albani graded this hadith weak.

As for Surah al-A’raf, we have not found anything concerning a specific virtue for it in the books of Sunnah available to us — and Allah knows best. The basic principle is that no particular virtue should be attributed to it unless established by an authentic or hasan text.

As for Surah al-Hashr, a weak hadith concerning its virtue was narrated by at-Tirmidhi and Ahmad from Ma’qil bin Yasar, that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever says three times in the morning: A’udhu billahi as-Sami’ al-‘Alim min ash-shaytan ar-rajim, and then recites the last three verses of Surah al-Hashr, Allah will appoint seventy thousand angels to invoke blessings upon him until evening. If he dies that day, he dies as a martyr. Whoever says it in the evening will attain the same status.”

Al-Albani graded this hadith weak.

As for Surah Fussilat and Surah ar-Rahman, to the best of our knowledge no authentic hadith has been established indicating a specific virtue for either of them.

We emphasize that the entire Qur’an is virtuous, blessed, healing, and sufficient. Any surah for which no specific text establishes a particular virtue is nevertheless included within the many well-established texts concerning the general virtues of the Qur’an as a whole.

We advise the respected questioner to consult authentic reports concerning the virtues of the Qur’an in Sahih al-Jami’ by al-Albani, Riyadh as-Salihin by Imam an-Nawawi, and Mishkat al-Masabih by al-Khatib at-Tabrizi. We also caution our respected sister against books that contain fabricated hadiths concerning virtues and meritorious deeds.

It should be understood that the weak hadiths mentioned above may be acted upon when they fall under an established general principle, provided that their weakness is not severe and that the person acts upon them as a matter of precaution rather than believing them to be definitively established, since this concerns virtuous deeds. However, if a hadith is fabricated, extremely weak, or does not fall under an established general principle, then it may not be acted upon in matters of virtuous deeds or in anything else.

And Allah knows best.
