Question:
I am a wife and mother of four children, and I am thirty years old. When dealing with other people, I am extremely kind and calm. Even if someone mistreats me, I am unable to respond except by crying.
However, I am completely different with my family. If something happens that makes me angry, I erupt and cannot control myself. I may even insult my husband and children and behave harshly toward them.
I know very well that this is not permissible, but I am unable to restrain my anger — Allah forbid. Afterwards, I seek forgiveness from my Lord and apologize. My husband understands that this behavior is not my usual nature, so he always forgives me. However, this certainly has a negative effect on my children, when I am supposed to be an example for them. What should I do? Am I sinful for this? I am afraid that I may be disobeying Allah.

Answer:
All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his Companions. To proceed:
Imam al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that a man said to the Prophet ﷺ: “Advise me.” He replied:
“Do not become angry.” The man repeated his request several times, but the Prophet continued to say: “Do not become angry.” In a narration by Ahmad and Ibn Hibban it is stated: “I reflected upon what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said, and I realized that anger gathers together all evil.”
Ibn at-Tin said: “The Prophet ﷺ gathered together the good of this world and the Hereafter in his words, ‘Do not become angry,’ because anger may lead to severing relationships and may even lead a person to harm the one with whom he is angry, thereby diminishing his religious commitment.”
One way to treat anger is to avoid its causes and triggers. In this sense, the saying of the Prophet ﷺ, “Do not become angry,” can be understood as meaning: avoid the causes of anger. Therefore, you should identify the things that provoke your anger and resentment and stay away from them.
Know that your husband is among those most deserving of kind treatment and patience regarding what may come from him. How, then, could you treat him worse than you treat other people? The same applies to your children. Rather, you should regard their mistakes as realities that need to be addressed properly, not with anger, because anger does not solve the problem and may instead make matters worse.
If you feel anger rising, seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed. Two men once argued in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, and one of them became so angry that his eyes reddened and the veins of his neck swelled. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“I know a phrase which, if he were to say it, what he is experiencing would leave him: ‘A’udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim’ — ‘I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed.’” (Agreed upon, from the hadith of Sulayman ibn Surad, may Allah be pleased with him)
If your anger becomes more intense, then if you are standing, sit down; if you are sitting, recline; and if you are reclining, lie down. This is based on the saying of the Prophet ﷺ:
“If you become angry while standing, sit down. If you are sitting, recline. If you are reclining, lie down.” (Narrated by Ibn Abi ad-Dunya. Al-‘Iraqi said in Takhrij al-Ihya’ that its chain of transmission is authentic.)
Among the ways of repelling and calming anger is performing wudu. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Anger is from Satan, and Satan was created from fire. Fire is extinguished with water, so when one of you becomes angry, let him perform wudu.” (Narrated by Imam Ahmad and Abu Dawud from the hadith of ‘Atiyyah ibn ‘Urwah, may Allah be pleased with him)
We should also remember the virtue of restraining anger, which is among the characteristics of the doers of good whom Allah, Glorified and Exalted, loves. Allah Most High says:
“Those who restrain their anger and pardon people — and Allah loves the doers of good.” (Surah Ali ‘Imran, verse 134)
The number and variety of these methods for treating anger show how much attention the wise Shari’ah gives to this human tendency and to the proper way of dealing with it, because of the serious consequences that may result. How many families have been destroyed, relationships severed, and lives lost because of a single moment of uncontrolled anger.
Therefore, a Muslim should resist anger, strive against the self, and cultivate the quality of forbearance. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The strong person is not the one who defeats others in wrestling; rather, the strong person is the one who controls himself when angry.” (Narrated by Imam al-Bukhari)
And Allah knows best.
