This paper, “Orientalist Doubts Concerning the Prophetic Sunnah: Their Advocates, Their Evidence, and Their Refutation — A Critical Study,” is included in the Science of Hadith Category

In conclusion, the scholars of this Ummah explained the causes behind differences among hadiths. Whenever the cause was fabrication, they identified it, and whenever the cause was something else, they explained that as well. They also authored valuable books and important reference works on this subject.1

This provides a clear explanation of the causes behind differences and apparent contradictions among certain hadiths, so that Orientalists may understand the matter. It also serves, according to the author, as an argument against those who deliberately raise the issue of contradiction as though it were simply a conflict between authentic and inauthentic hadiths.

When an apparent contradiction is found, the scholars explain how it should be resolved according to established principles known among the imams of hadith, within the discipline of ikhtilaf al-hadith. In summary, they first examine whether the apparently conflicting hadiths can be reconciled. If reconciliation is possible, each hadith is understood as applying to a particular circumstance, action, or context.

If reconciliation is not possible, their chronology is examined to determine whether one came later than the other. If so, the later ruling is regarded as the nasikh (abrogating text), while the earlier one is regarded as the mansukh (abrogated text).

If it cannot be determined which report came earlier and which came later, preference is given to one over the other through tarjih, according to the recognized criteria used by hadith scholars. If no preference can be established because the transmission routes of both reports are equal, judgment is suspended until evidence emerges that makes one view stronger. The text describes this, where applicable, in connection with the category of mudtarib hadith.2

The documentation of the Prophetic Sunnah passed through four stages: the stage of writing, approximately from 1–70 AH; the stage of systematic recording (tadwin), from 70–120 AH; the stage of classification and compilation, from 120–150 AH; and the stage in which comprehensive hadith collections began to appear, from 150–200 AH.

A failure to understand the expressions and technical terminology used by the imams of hadith led, according to the author, to errors in the conclusions Orientalists reached concerning the history of recording the Sunnah. In particular, they understood the term tadwin as though it simply meant “writing.”

The principles of the hadith sciences constitute a comprehensive critical methodology that examines every aspect of hadith thoroughly and precisely.

The efforts of hadith scholars in applying this critical methodology reached a high level in pursuing the goal of preserving Prophetic hadith. Their numerous works cover many categories of hadith: some are devoted specifically to authentic reports, others to weak reports, others to fabricated reports, and still others to independent branches of hadith studies such as musalsal, mudraj, and other categories. These works constitute practical evidence of the considerable care they devoted to applying this methodology, through which, according to the author, they transmitted the Prophetic heritage in a clear and preserved form.

Thus, the author concludes that the doubts raised by Orientalists concerning the Prophetic Sunnah and its documentation have been answered and dispelled.

The author further argues that the Orientalists’ lack of knowledge concerning isnad and matn indicates that their judgments were obscured by their own inclinations. He states that they made strenuous efforts to criticize both the chains and texts of hadith while themselves lacking a reliable basis for what they asserted. In his view, this caused them to depart from sound reasoning and intellectual consistency, comparing their approach to claiming that truth can be derived from falsehood, knowledge from ignorance, or that human beings should take their learning from animals.

Finally, the author summarizes a number of doubts and accusations raised by Orientalist critics against the noble Prophetic Sunnah. Among them were the allegation that the critical methodology of hadith scholars was deficient, that it failed to give proper consideration to the principles of jarh and ta’dil, that it rested upon contradiction and uncertainty in evaluating narrators as trustworthy or criticized, and that the same uncertainty affected the classification of hadiths as authentic or weak. These claims also included the allegation that the Sunnah was not recorded until the beginning of the second Islamic century and that the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, fabricated and invented it.

May Allah send His blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all of his Companions. And our final supplication is: all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
