This paper, “Orientalist Doubts Concerning the Prophetic Sunnah: Their Advocates, Their Evidence, and Their Refutation — A Critical Study,” is included in the Science of Hadith Category

According to the author, what drove them to such extremes in attacking the Sunnah of the Chosen Prophet ﷺ was what they observed in the Prophetic hadith accepted by Muslim scholars: an astonishing wealth of intellectual and legislative material. Since they do not believe in the prophethood of the Seal of the Prophets ﷺ, they claimed that it was inconceivable for all of this to have originated from an unlettered Prophet. Instead, they argued that it was the work of Muslims during the first three centuries. The author therefore identifies their underlying problem as their disbelief in the prophethood of the Messenger ﷺ, from which, in his view, their confusion, fallacies, and misconceptions arise.1

Yet Allah Most High will perfect His light even though the disbelievers may dislike it. He has raised for this Ummah outstanding scholars and great men, both in earlier and later generations, who preserved the Sunnah and protected it from tampering and from the fabrications of those with hostile intentions. They distinguished truth from falsehood, the authentic from the weak, defended the sanctity of the purified Sunnah, and refuted the doubts raised by its critics with arguments and evidence.2

Dr. Mustafa as-Siba’i, may Allah have mercy on him, wrote about the standards of research used by Orientalists, presenting the following as a guiding light for the reader while reading this article:

“The Orientalists, when formulating their judgments concerning Islamic law, rely upon a standard that is exceedingly strange within the field of academic research. It is well known that a sincere scholar frees himself from personal desire and individual inclination in the subject he wishes to investigate, and follows reliable texts and references. Whatever conclusion these sources lead to after comparison and examination becomes the result upon which he builds his scholarly conviction. Most of these Orientalists, however, first formulate a particular idea in their minds and then seek out evidence with which to prove it. When the evidence does not agree with them or is insufficient to establish their claim, what concerns them is whether it can nevertheless be used to support their personal views. They often generalize from a particular incident, and from this emerge strange contradictions that indicate personal inclination and predetermined purpose.”3

If one traces the doubts raised against the Prophetic Sunnah by Orientalists and those whom the author describes as hostile to the religion of Allah Most High, one will find, according to the author, that they attempt to cast doubt upon virtually every aspect of the religion. There is no single limited set of objections; rather, the whole religion becomes a subject of suspicion and doubt in their approach. The author argues that this can be seen clearly in their writings, lectures, seminars, newspapers, and media. For this reason, he maintains that a serious response to Orientalism requires studying its origins and the true nature of its objectives, and explaining these matters to the Muslim community on every suitable occasion and in every place. Many of these doubts, he states, are in fact old in substance and content. They had appeared in earlier periods and their influence had subsided after sincere Muslim scholars responded to them, until Orientalists later revived and reformulated them in new forms.4

For this reason, it is difficult for a researcher to collect all of these doubts and discuss each one through rational and logical arguments, historical events, and objective studies, since doing so would require multiple volumes and extensive works. It is therefore sufficient, according to the author, to present the most important doubts concerning the Prophetic Sunnah that are commonly found among the majority of Orientalist writers. Among the most significant of these doubts are the following:
