First: The Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, used to critique the contents of one another’s narrations. For example, Sayyidah ‘Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, criticized the substance of a number of reports narrated by other Companions, while some of her own narrations were also subjected to criticism by other Companions. Imam Badr ad-Din Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullah az-Zarkashi even authored a work collecting the reports in which ‘Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, criticized narrations transmitted by some of the Companions.

Second: One of the major causes of disagreement among the schools of Islamic jurisprudence is related to the analysis of hadith texts. The juristic schools accepted many authentic hadiths, yet differed in their interpretation and understanding of those reports.

Third: The discipline of ikhtilaf al-hadith, which deals with hadiths that appear outwardly to conflict with one another, is a clear testimony to the attention Muslim scholars gave to textual criticism. Scholars took an early interest in this field, beginning with the work of Imam Muhammad ibn Idris ash-Shafi’i, may Allah have mercy on him, entitled Ikhtilaf al-Hadith, followed by many other works. In addition, scholars identified numerous methods of weighing apparently conflicting hadiths, some relating to the isnad and others relating to the matn. All of this demonstrates the considerable attention Muslim scholars devoted to hadith texts. Ibn Khuzaymah even said: “There are no two hadiths that contradict one another in every respect. Whoever finds anything of that kind should bring it to me, and I will reconcile the two.”1

Fourth: Matn criticism received major attention within the discipline of ‘ilal al-hadith, the study of hidden defects in hadith, which is regarded as one of the highest branches of hadith analysis. This discipline involves carefully comparing the narrations of trustworthy transmitters. Its subject includes hadiths whose chains outwardly appear authentic, yet which scholars may still classify as weak because their texts contain objectionable elements, irregularities, or inconsistency. For this reason, hadith specialists developed expressions such as munkar al-matn, gharib, shadh, and mudtarib.

Likewise, when scholars say that a hadith has a sahih isnad or a hasan isnad, this does not automatically mean that its matn is itself authentic or sound, since there may still be an irregularity or hidden defect in the text. Conversely, a matn may be established as sound even when a particular chain is not, because other evidence or transmission routes support the text. Determining the authenticity of a hadith therefore does not depend upon the chain alone, but also requires extensive knowledge of hadith texts and their contents. According to the author, this demonstrates the comprehensive and objective methodology of the hadith scholars in criticizing both isnad and matn.

Fifth: When hadith scholars divided the discipline of hadith terminology, they divided it into two branches: ‘ilm al-hadith riwayah, the science of hadith transmission, and ‘ilm al-hadith dirayah, the science of hadith analysis and understanding. They defined the latter as: “A science consisting of principles by which the conditions of the isnad and the matn are known with respect to acceptance and rejection.” This means that the discipline itself established rules for evaluating and regulating both the chain of transmission and the text together.
