Over the course of more than a century, the feminist movement has passed through numerous stages of historical development, and its evolution has been accompanied by a corresponding development in feminist discourse.
This discourse began with cautious discussion of women’s human and social rights, but eventually developed into calls for absolute equality and complete parity with men, and in some cases, according to the author, even for moving beyond men altogether. The author further suggests that it would not be surprising if, in the future, such discourse were to speak of a “women’s people” or “women’s nation,” similar to certain strands of Western feminist discourse today.
Anyone who follows the issues raised by feminist discourse can observe that it revolves around a number of recurring themes that, according to the author, can largely be identified and categorized. These include the oppression of women, male patriarchal domination, women’s economic empowerment, violence against women, and similar issues, all of which form recurring elements of feminist discourse.
According to the author, one of the most prominent features of contemporary feminist discourse is its disdain for matters that are established and agreed upon within Islamic law. The author states that such discourse views polygamy, women’s prescribed shares of inheritance, and the waiting period of a divorced woman as matters that allegedly reveal Islam’s bias toward men and its reduction of women’s rights. At best, the author says, these rulings are portrayed as no longer compatible with the present age.
Feminist discourse, according to the author, directs a particularly large share of its criticism toward the hijab. From the perspective attributed here to feminist advocates, the hijab reduces the woman who wears it to a mere “object,” causing her to lose her individuality and personal identity and turning her into little more than a number among other women. The author remarks that, paradoxically, Arab feminists can at times be more stringent in their opposition to the hijab than their Western feminist counterparts. As an example, the author cites British feminist Germaine Greer, author of the controversial book The Whole Woman, as accepting the hijab as part of the cultural identity of Arab peoples.
The author argues that while feminist discourse attacks the hijab as a symbol of modesty and chastity, it simultaneously promotes proposals associated with Western feminist organizations concerning women’s sexual freedom, the legitimacy of sexual relations outside marriage, and other ideas that the author regards as falling outside the religious, moral, and ethical framework of Arab and Muslim societies.
The author further portrays the recent campaign by Egyptian feminists calling for sex education to be taught in schools as only a first step toward spreading such ideas more widely.
According to the author, a careful researcher examining the questions and issues raised by feminist discourse will have little difficulty identifying what she describes as its state of Westernization. In her view, the discourse has not merely borrowed Western approaches to women’s issues, but has also imported problems experienced by Western women and projected them onto Arab Muslim women.
