Question:
I have a question that I hope you can clarify for me because it has caused me confusion and uncertainty. Alhamdulillah, I consistently observe my obligatory prayers, fast, pay zakah, and fear my Lord. Although I would not describe myself as particularly religious, alhamdulillah I perform the obligatory acts of worship and recite the morning adhkar almost every day. Whenever I need something related to worldly matters, I supplicate to my Lord because I believe that He, Glorified and Exalted, loves to hear the supplication of His servants and that He is All-Hearing and Responsive, even if the answer is delayed.
But here is the problem. Like most people, I sometimes become heedless of remembering Allah and I have certain sins. I always try to seek forgiveness, but sometimes when something worries me, when I am in difficulty, or when I need some worldly matter such as an increase in provision, marriage to a suitable man, success, or something similar, I increase my istighfar in the hope of acting upon the saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:
“Whoever constantly seeks forgiveness, Allah will grant him a way out of every hardship, relief from every distress, and provide for him from where he does not expect.”
So I seek forgiveness frequently and with deep earnestness.
However, I read on one website that every act of worship must be performed purely for the sake of Allah Most High and for seeking the Hereafter; otherwise it would be a form of minor shirk. In other words, if sincerity in worship is used as a means of obtaining some worldly benefit, it would supposedly constitute a deficiency in faith and minor shirk.
I do not want to be deficient in faith. Rather, I want Allah to be pleased with me in this world and the Hereafter. Yet it is natural for a person to seek certain worldly needs, and supplication has been prescribed for this very reason.
What confuses me now is that I feel there is some contradiction between the hadith of the Messenger ﷺ concerning istighfar and what I mentioned above. I understand that a believer should worship Allah with a sincere intention for His sake and for the reward, rather than treating worship merely as a means of obtaining worldly things. Alhamdulillah, this is what I try to do.
Yet I now have a problem: whenever I seek forgiveness in accordance with the hadith mentioned above, I feel as though I am being hypocritical, especially when I need something from my Lord such as marriage, success in life, or relief from a difficulty. I hope you can clarify this confusion for me. May Allah reward you with goodness.

Answer:
All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his Companions. To proceed:
Before answering, we first wish to draw your attention to the error in your statement, “I am not religious.” On the one hand, a Muslim should indeed be religious, meaning that they fulfill the obligations and avoid what Allah has prohibited, as commanded by their Creator. On the other hand, this statement contradicts what you have mentioned about your concern that Allah be pleased with you in this world and the Hereafter.
There is no doubt that a Muslim must intend through righteous deeds to seek the Face of Allah and be sincere to Him, Glorified and Exalted, as He says:
“Say: Indeed, I have been commanded to worship Allah, devoting the religion sincerely to Him.” (Surah az-Zumar: 11)
And He also says:
“And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, devoting the religion sincerely to Him.” (Surah al-Bayyinah: 6)
It is established in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim from ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“Actions are only according to intentions, and every person will have only what they intended. Whoever’s migration was for some worldly gain they wished to obtain, or for a woman they wished to marry, then their migration was for that for which they migrated.”
Accordingly, if a Muslim performs a particular dhikr with no purpose other than obtaining the worldly benefit promised as a consequence of that dhikr, then this is contrary to sincerity. However, if that worldly benefit is intended only as a secondary objective while the dhikr itself is performed for Allah Most High, then there is no harm in that.
Mulla ‘Ali al-Qari said in his commentary on Mishkat al-Masabih while explaining some hadiths:
“These hadiths indicate that performing an action for Allah while hoping for the reward He has attached to that action and seeking to obtain it does not contradict sincerity or completeness, even though it falls short of what is most perfect: performing the deed solely to seek the Face of Allah Most High, without seeking any other purpose or recompense.” End quote.
Shaykh Salih ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz Al ash-Shaykh said in his commentary on al-Arba’in an-Nawawiyyah while explaining the saying of the Prophet ﷺ:
“Whoever makes things easy for someone in difficulty, Allah will make things easy for him in this world and the Hereafter.”
قال:
He said:
“This is among the rewards appointed for both this world and the Hereafter. There is therefore no harm in a Muslim intending, when making things easy for his brothers, to seek what is with Allah — Glorious and Exalted — while also hoping that Allah will make things easy for him in this world and the Hereafter. As we mentioned when explaining the hadith, ‘Actions are only according to intentions,’ this does not contradict sincerity. If the Shari’ah has attached to an action a reward in this world, or in both this world and the Hereafter, then intending that reward together with seeking the Face of Allah, Glorious and Exalted, and being sincere to Him does not involve any harm.” End quote.
We hope that through this explanation the matter has become clear to you and your confusion has been removed.
And Allah knows best.
