The mother plays an extremely important role in raising children during the early years of their lives because she is more closely connected to the home and the child, and because her affection toward the child is stronger than that of the father. She is therefore closer to the hearts of children than he is.
Allah has endowed the mother with the emotion of tenderness — motherhood — in a way that the father does not possess to the same degree. This natural impulse is among the strongest of all instinctive drives. For this reason, the mother is naturally prepared to care for the child and to sacrifice her comfort and sleep for the child’s sake, willingly and contentedly.
This tenderness enables the mother to stay awake for the comfort of her child, especially during the first two years, which have a major impact on the individual’s personality. Among the things that occur during this period is that the infant first recognizes the mother by her scent, and later comes to recognize her voice.
The mother’s language is also the first language imitated by the child, and most of the child’s emotional responses during the first year are connected to and centered upon the mother, or whoever takes her place.
If we recognize that from around the sixth month of life the infant begins the process of forming personality and character, then we must not overlook the mother’s role in carrying this trust, fulfilling the duty of responsibility, and guiding her children.
Allah has explained in His clear revelation: “And the good land brings forth its vegetation by the permission of its Lord, while that which is bad produces nothing except with difficulty. Thus do We explain the signs for people who are grateful.” (Surah al-A’raf: 58)
As the poet said: “The mother is a school; if you prepare her well, you prepare a people of noble roots.”
In bearing responsibility, the mother stands alongside the father. Indeed, the author regards her responsibility as even more important and serious because she remains closely connected to her child from birth until the child grows, develops, and reaches an age at which he becomes capable of fulfilling responsibilities and facing life. The Messenger ﷺ specifically mentioned the mother’s responsibility when he said: “The woman is a caretaker in her husband’s household, and she is responsible for those under her care.”
According to the author, this is intended to make the mother conscious of the need to cooperate with the father in preparing the next generation and raising the children. If a mother neglects her educational responsibility toward her children because she is preoccupied with acquaintances and friends, entertaining guests, going out to markets, or working without necessity, while leaving the children with a caregiver and failing to pay proper attention to their care and upbringing, the author warns that such children may grow up deprived of parental guidance and become vulnerable to serious behavioral problems.
The author therefore argues that when a mother becomes excessively preoccupied and neglects the care and upbringing of her children, the risk of deviation and harmful behavior increases greatly.
The situation becomes even worse, the author says, when both parents spend most of their time in a life of sin and misguidance, consumed by desires and pleasures and drifting along a path of moral dissolution and permissiveness.
The author contends that, under such circumstances, a child’s deviation may become deeper and more dangerous. He therefore invites the reader to examine carefully, with an open and discerning mind, the responsibility of upbringing as represented by mothers of the past and mothers of the present, and to consider the results of that comparison.
The mother of the past, according to the author, was everything within her household: she was the educator and the manager of all domestic affairs.
She acted and taught, because knowledge without practice does not become firmly rooted in the mind or truly accepted.
Although her formal education may have been simple and her understanding of religion limited, she nevertheless strove diligently to raise her children according to an Islamic upbringing that she believed to be pleasing to Allah.
She taught them responsibility by fulfilling her own responsibilities in the home, obeying her husband, raising her children, and teaching them their duties while also giving them their rights to care and attention.
She carried them against her chest, breastfed them, stayed awake to care for them when they were ill, and personally served their needs.
Such care, the author argues, leaves a profound effect on children’s hearts, nurturing in them dutifulness, kindness, obedience, and respect. They listen when she guides them, obey when she instructs them, and help her when she becomes weak.
To be continued in the next part, in sha Allah
