The Mother: Between the Past and the Present (Part Two)

As for the mother of today — and I do not mean the mother who raises her children upon sound religion, good character, and proper values, but rather another type — household work is no longer regarded as part of her responsibility, including the upbringing of her children. She entrusts them to what the author calls an “imported mother” — the caregiver — who assumes the role of the real mother in managing all the children’s affairs: washing their clothes, dressing them, preparing their food and drink, and even playing with them.
She is also the one who feeds them powdered milk, and the author points to what he sees as the effects of artificial feeding on the child’s physical and psychological development. The caregiver is likewise the one who displays affection and tenderness toward them and who personally teaches them the religion, morals, and values in which she herself was raised. If she comes from an Eastern background, the children will take on Eastern manners; if she comes from a Western background, their manners will tend toward the West.
As a result, their loyalties and attachments — what the source describes in terms of wala’ and bara’ — are shaped by the upbringing they receive, while their respect, appreciation, affection, and obedience become directed toward the caregiver.
Can a caregiver truly take the place of a mother? Can she teach our children the religion of tawhid and the ways of our righteous predecessors? Can she stay awake for the children’s comfort as a real mother does? Can she show the same patience and protect them as a mother protects her children? Is her love for them equal to their mother’s love? And is natural breastfeeding from the mother’s breast the same as artificial feeding?
These questions await an answer. If we answer them honestly, the author argues, we will understand the difference between the real mother and the “imported mother,” meaning the caregiver.
The author warns that when a mother gives up her primary role and treats it lightly, she may eventually face consequences with unhappy outcomes. One such consequence, in his view, is that when she grows old she may end up in a nursing home. Because she did not raise her children herself, he argues, they may in turn leave the state to care for her when she becomes unable to care for herself. He presents nursing homes as a visible example of neglect toward parents and invites the reader to visit such institutions and observe for themselves.
Even before that, the author says, signs of disobedience may become apparent in the children’s refusal to obey her, respect her, or listen to her words. He attributes this to the mother not having accustomed them from childhood to listening to her guidance or taught them to respect and obey her.
Among the other harmful consequences described by the author is that such children may fail to benefit or serve their country or the society in which they live, because from an early age they were not taught to respect their religion, defend it, or protect their homeland and property. The author argues that a child who is disobedient to his parents may also find it easier to betray his country and damage his society. He further connects neglect in upbringing with children’s deviation from religion and truth, including both outward and inward sins, such as alcohol and drug addiction, crime, and unlawful sexual relations.
Do we understand what is happening around us? Does the mother understand her true role? Does she realize that sincerely devoting herself to raising her children is first of all a service to herself and to her homeland — a form of giving that, in the author’s view, has no equal?
If we wish to see a righteous and beneficial generation that serves its Ummah, strengthens its unity, and earns the respect of others, the author argues that the mother of today who has neglected her primary role must return to sound judgment and to what he regards as her true responsibilities. She should dedicate what she has learned through her education to serving and raising her children. In turn, this will affect the quality of the next generation and their service to their homeland and to the Ummah as a whole. The author presents this as part of what is needed to awaken from a long period of stagnation, overcome civilizational and economic backwardness, and help the Muslim Ummah regain its former strength.
Alhamdulillah, this two-part article series is now complete.
