On one moonlit summer night, a warrior returned after thirty years of jihad. He had left behind his young bride while she was carrying a child in her womb.
The warrior looked to his right and left, trying to recognize the house where his wife and child lived, though he knew nothing of what had become of either of them.
The features of the City of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had changed from what he once knew, and its population had greatly increased. No one paid attention to him as he made his way toward his home. No one seemed to care that he had returned after such a long absence. But did anyone still remember him?
Did anyone remember that warrior who, as soon as he heard the call to jihad, hurried to answer it, leaving behind his pregnant wife while she was still a newlywed, only a few months into their marriage?
For nearly a third of a century, the warrior had moved with the Muslim armies from one conquest to another and from one victory to the next, scarcely allowing his longing for his wife and child — whether the child was a boy or a girl — to shake his resolve.
His wife had continued waiting for him until all hope of his return had faded. People differed over what had happened to him, but as the years passed and all news ceased, his wife and those around her increasingly believed that the warrior had been martyred.
The warrior continued until he recognized the place where his house stood. Astonishment overwhelmed him, and he did not even knock at the door. After all, who could prevent him from entering his own home?
He entered the house, only to find a man around thirty years old suddenly charging at him like a lion pouncing upon its prey.
How could this elderly man, carrying a sword and spear, simply enter the house and violate the sanctity of those within it? The confrontation between the two intensified. The young man pushed the older man away, defending the honor of his household, while the elder swore that the house was his own.
Their voices rose until the neighbors rushed out and surrounded the elderly man as tightly as a bracelet encircles a wrist, defending their young neighbor. The old man tried to remind them who he was, but no one recognized him or believed him.
The commotion reached the mother while she was asleep. She awoke to the uproar of the men and looked down from the upper part of the house. What she saw left her stunned.
She could hardly believe her eyes. She looked again to make certain of what she was seeing. It was Farukh — her husband, the warrior — standing there in flesh and blood, the very man she had last seen thirty years earlier.
At once she remembered the day he had bid her farewell, advising her to take good care of herself and reminding her that he had left thirty thousand dinars with her — wealth he had gained from his jihad before receiving his freedom from his commander, the noble Companion ar-Rabi’ ibn Ziyad al-Harithi.
To be continued in the next part, in sha Allah
