Many questions raced through Farukh’s mind. Who was this young Shaykh who possessed such remarkable dignity and was treated with such reverence by everyone around him?

The returning warrior quickly turned to a man sitting beside him and asked about the dignified Shaykh. The man was astonished that anyone could fail to recognize him and found it strange that a resident of Madinah did not know who he was. Yet Farukh had, after all, been absent for thirty years.

How could he possibly know a Shaykh such as this after so long away? Besides, he had not yet been able to make out his features clearly. Farukh therefore apologized for not recognizing him and explained the length of his absence from Madinah. Once the man understood the reason, he excused Farukh for not knowing such a prominent scholar.

The man began to introduce the Shaykh: “My brother, the man you do not recognize is one of the leading figures among the Tabi’in and one of their most distinguished scholars. He is the hadith scholar of Madinah, its jurist, and its Imam, despite his relatively young age.”

“Do you not see that his gathering includes Malik ibn Anas, Abu Hanifah an-Nu’man, Yahya ibn Sa’id al-Ansari, al-Awza’i, al-Layth ibn Sa’d, and many others?”

“Beyond all that, he is exceedingly humble, and his hand is more generous than a rain cloud. No one is known to be more open-handed or more giving than he is.”

Farukh interrupted him: “But you have not told me his name.” The man replied, “He is Rabi’ah ar-Ra’y.”

Farukh reacted at once upon hearing the name Rabi’ah, but before he could finish speaking, the man continued: “He was given the title ar-Ra’y because of the soundness of his judgment in difficult matters for which there was no explicit text, by drawing analogy with matters for which a text did exist.”

Farukh became eager to know the lineage of this Rabi’ah ar-Ra’y. The man replied: “Rabi’ah ar-Ra’y is the son of Farukh, whose kunyah is Abu ‘Abd ar-Rahman.”

“He was born after his father left Madinah for jihad in the path of Allah. His mother then took responsibility for raising him, disciplining him, and educating him. People are saying that his father returned last night.”

At that moment, tears began to fall from Farukh’s eyes, and he could hardly explain the depth of the emotion that overwhelmed him. His tears continued to stream down his face until he reached home.

His wife anxiously asked what was wrong. The warrior replied: “Nothing is wrong. It is nothing but goodness. I have seen my son at a level of knowledge, honor, and distinction that I have never before seen in anyone.”

At this, the face of the righteous and wise wife and mother brightened. The time had finally come to answer the question that had been weighing on her mind. Seizing the opportunity, she asked: “Which is dearer to you: thirty thousand dinars, or the level of knowledge and honor your son has attained?”

The warrior replied: “By Allah, this is dearer to me and more precious in my sight than all the wealth of this world.”

She said: “Then know that I spent what you left with me on him. Are you pleased with what I did?”

He replied: “Yes. May Allah reward you with the best of rewards on my behalf and on behalf of the Muslims.”

It is through such insight and awareness in raising children that an Ummah rises to distinction. Are there still mothers like Umm Rabi’ah in an age when examples such as hers have become so rare?

Alhamdulillah, this three-part article series is now complete.
