She still remembered his words clearly: “Guard it — meaning the thirty thousand dinars — invest it, and spend from it on yourself and your child in a proper manner until I return to you safe and victorious, or until Allah grants me the martyrdom I long for.”

The mother came down while the echo of her husband’s words still rang in her ears as though he had only just spoken them. She asked everyone to disperse, thanking them for their good intentions, and explained that the man was Farukh, her husband and the father of their young neighbor.

Neither man could restrain himself. Each embraced the other, while the son knelt and kissed his father’s hand, apologizing through his joy. Their emotions became completely intertwined, and tears flowed from both of them in happiness at a reunion neither of them had ever expected.

The wife sat with her husband as he told her about nearly a third of a century spent in jihad with the Muslim armies, explaining the reasons for his long absence and the complete break in communication. The warrior continued speaking, but his wife’s mind was occupied with another concern.

She was trying to find a satisfactory answer in case her husband asked about the money he had left with her to invest and spend from in a proper manner. She searched for an answer that would not anger him — but how could she possibly explain it?

Now he was asking her about it while she tried to distract herself from the question. Should she tell him that nothing remained of the thirty thousand dinars? Would he believe that all of it had been spent on the education and upbringing of his son?

What kind of education could possibly consume such a vast amount of money? Would he believe that his son was generous of spirit and noble in character, constantly spending in all kinds of charitable and righteous causes?

While these thoughts raced through her mind, disturbing the joy of a reunion that Allah had brought about after she had become convinced they would never meet again, her husband interrupted her thoughts by saying: “O Umm Rabi’ah, I have come back to you with four thousand dinars. Bring out the money I entrusted to you so that we may purchase some property or a garden and live from its income for the rest of our lives.”

The wife tried to avoid answering him, but he persisted in his request. She feared his anger if he discovered the truth. What was she to do?

With wisdom and composure, she replied: “I have placed it where it ought to be placed, and I will bring it out for you, in sha Allah.”

At that moment, the voice of the mu’adhdhin rose for the Fajr prayer and interrupted their conversation. He prepared to leave for the mosque while asking about Rabi’ah, but Rabi’ah had already preceded him to the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

A deep longing for the Rawdah of al-Mustafa ﷺ stirred within him, driven by thirty years of yearning spent as a warrior far from the City of the Prophet ﷺ.

He performed the prayer and then sat in the noble Rawdah, filling his heart and his eyes with remembrance, prayer, and supplication — acts he had long yearned to perform in that blessed place.

When he came out of the mosque, however, he found its courtyard overflowing with people, so crowded that there was scarcely room to place a foot.

Everyone was seated in circle after circle around an imposing Shaykh. From where Farukh stood, he could not clearly make out the Shaykh’s features because of the distance. Yet the Shaykh’s eloquence captivated every discerning listener, as knowledge flowed from his lips in abundance, revealing a sharp and disciplined memory from which scarcely anything seemed to escape.

Farukh was astonished at the respect people showed before the Shaykh, at how they crowded around him and surrounded him, and how they hurried after him once he had finished his lesson.

To be continued in the next part, in sha Allah
