Question:

One of the brothers says: I was once sitting with someone who said that it is not permissible to engage in jihad alongside any Muslim people until that society has rid itself of every form of minor shirk, religious innovation, and sin. He claimed that if you fight alongside them while they remain in such a condition, you will not be granted victory over the enemy. He cited as evidence the fact that the Companions were defeated at the Battle of Uhud and also suffered a setback at the beginning of the Battle of Hunayn, even though their wrongdoing had not reached the level of shirk or religious innovation. He also cited the saying of Allah Most High:

{إِنْ تَنصُرُوا اللَّهَ يَنصُرْكُمْ}

“If you support Allah, He will support you and make your foothold firm.” (Surah Muhammad: 7)

According to him, Allah’s help will only come after society has been purified of religious innovations and sins. Is this view correct?

Answer:

There is no doubt that this statement is not generally correct. This person imagines that this major rite of Islam — jihad in the path of Allah — cannot be carried out unless the Muslims have first become completely free of every type of sin and disobedience. That is not realistically possible.

The historical reality among Muslims is that they fought their enemies even while sins and acts of disobedience existed among them. According to the Shaykh, sins and acts of disobedience may also be rectified through jihad, since jihad is among the greatest acts of worship.

A person would not participate in jihad, he explains, except while seeking the pleasure of Allah Almighty and the Hereafter. Such a state of heart, by Allah’s permission, may become a means for other sins and acts of disobedience to be erased.

If you gather with a thousand people who want to engage in jihad in the path of Allah, even though they had previously committed sins and acts of disobedience, then this determination to participate in fighting and expose themselves to danger and death indicates, in the Shaykh’s view, the presence of great faith in their hearts.

On that basis, this great faith in the person’s heart may, by Allah’s permission, become one of the causes for the expiation of the sins and acts of disobedience he had committed.

For this reason, Abu Mihjan ath-Thaqafi, as you know, used to drink wine and was imprisoned by Sa’d. Later, when he saw the fighting, he longed to take part in it, went out, and fought in the path of Allah. The Companions praised him for what he did and did not prevent him from participating.

Furthermore, jihad in the path of Allah is one of the deeds of Islam. If a person were only allowed to perform Islamic deeds after becoming completely pure and free of sin, then one could just as well say: “Why should I pray when I still have sins?”

In other words, what if an adulterer said: “Why should I pray while I still have sins? Why should I fast? Why should I perform the other deeds of Islam?”

Subhanallah! Instead of treating the problem, you would only make it worse by abandoning the prayer.

My brother, even if you have shortcomings, continue performing the deeds of Islam: support the oppressed, give charity, raise your hands every day and ask your Lord to protect you from the evil of that sin, and repent to Allah Almighty from it.

This is how a person should deal with sins. As for dealing with sin in such a way that Satan drags a person from one sin to another until he eventually leads him to disbelief, this is among the most dangerous of Satan’s tricks and steps.
