The Ruling on Jihad While Still Falling into Sins and Religious Innovations (Part Three)

Questions and Answers with Shaykh ‘Abd ar-Rahim as-Sulami (Lecturer in the Department of Creed, Religions, and Contemporary Schools of Thought at Umm al-Qura University)

This article, “The Ruling on Jihad While Still Falling into Sins and Religious Innovations,” is included in the Questions about Islamic Creed Category

For this reason, we warn against sins so that they do not become a cause of defeat. Yet such an effect does not necessarily occur in every case, because there is a legal principle: for a cause to produce its effect in reality, the necessary conditions must be present and the impediments must be absent.

The first condition is that the cause must actually be present and effective.

The second is that Allah wills to punish this Ummah through that particular sin.

Therefore, the Shaykh says, it is not possible to wait until the Ummah becomes completely purified, with no sins, no religious innovations, and nothing else of that kind, and only then engage in jihad. That is not how the matter works.

Salah ad-Din al-Ayyubi, for example, studied under some teachers who held the Ash’ari creed, which the Shaykh says he himself criticizes. It is true, he adds, that Salah ad-Din was primarily a military man and commander rather than a scholar engaged in detailed theological study.

Yet many of the teachers who taught in his state, those who held positions of influence, and the leading scholars of his time were Ash’ari scholars who, according to the Shaykh’s assessment, held certain religious innovations. But should the other Islamic qualities they possessed simply be ignored?

Should we forget their reverence for Allah? Should we forget that they established the prayer? That they upheld the Shari’ah? That they maintained courts and applied Islamic legal rulings?

The Shaykh further notes that Salah ad-Din al-Ayyubi expelled the Crusaders and established Dar al-Hadith al-Ashrafiyyah in Damascus for Ibn ‘Asakir ad-Dimashqi, where Ash’ari theological doctrines — which the Shaykh says he criticizes — were taught.

The presence of religious innovations or sins therefore does not mean, in the Shaykh’s view, that the Ummah is unfit to engage in jihad. Rather, jihad may be undertaken collectively even when shortcomings exist. He argues that Allah Almighty may place blessing in them through it, reduce their sins and innovations, and prepare for them a condition better than what they had before.

The Shaykh argues that jihad can help cleanse sins and acts of disobedience, reduce religious innovations by Allah’s permission, and unite Muslims. For that reason, he regards it as one of the greatest and most beneficial remedies for the Ummah.

Thus, the understanding of the brother mentioned in the question is incorrect. At the same time, the Shaykh says, Muslims should work along two parallel tracks and avoid reactionary extremes. It would also be wrong to say, for example, that the entire Ummah should participate in jihad while people remain in sin and no effort is made to call them to Allah.

Rather, he says, people should be called to Allah and reformed while also being urged to fulfill what he regards as their duty of jihad. He even argues that Muslims who commit sins should still call others to Allah Almighty, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong. Are they not still Muslims? And is calling to Allah not one of the rites of Islam?

The Shaykh therefore calls upon military personnel to strive to invite others to Allah Almighty within their military environment, and upon judges to do the same with defendants brought before them, offering them sincere advice.

The same is asked of students and of every person within his own sphere: to uphold justice, strive to be truthful, keep away from sins and acts of disobedience, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and benefit Muslims to the best of his ability.

This remains the case even if a person still has shortcomings — even if he is clean-shaven, lets his garment hang below the ankles, owns a satellite dish, or watches female dancers. The Shaykh emphasizes that he is not minimizing the danger of sins and disobedience; rather, such matters should still be warned against and sincere advice should still be given.

At the same time, Satan should not be allowed to manipulate people by using their sins and shortcomings as a reason for them to abandon the reform of society or to stop enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong. All people make mistakes, and all have shortcomings.

Do you imagine that merely because a person grows a beard or shortens his garment he has automatically become one of the perfectly pious and truthful servants of Allah? No. He may still fall into error and sin. All of us make mistakes, but a person should not neglect the duty of sincere advice.

Thus, the Shaykh concludes, Islamic legal principles should be understood in this balanced manner.

Alhamdulillah, this three-part article series is now complete.
