This article, “Types of Hadith Compilations,” is included in the Science of Hadith Category

Sixth: Zawa’id Collections

These are works that collect hadiths found in certain hadith books that are additional to those contained in other collections, while excluding the hadiths shared by both groups of books. Scholars produced many works of this type. Among the most important are the following two:

1. Majma’ az-Zawa’id wa Manba’ al-Fawa’id by al-Hafizh Nur ad-Din ‘Ali ibn Abi Bakr al-Haythami (d. 807 AH). In this work, he collected hadiths additional to those in the Six Books from six important sources: Musnad Ahmad, Musnad Abi Ya’la al-Mawsili, Musnad al-Bazzar, and the three Mu’jam collections of at-Tabarani. He also gave particular attention to clarifying the status of the hadiths in terms of authenticity and weakness, and whether their chains were connected or interrupted. The work is therefore of great benefit to hadith researchers.

2. Al-Matalib al-‘Aliyah bi Zawa’id al-Masanid ath-Thamaniyah by al-Hafizh Ahmad ibn ‘Ali ibn Hajar al-‘Asqalani ash-Shafi’i, the eminent Imam and scholar (d. 852 AH). In this book, he gathered hadiths additional to those found in the Six Books from eight Musnad collections: those of Abu Dawud at-Tayalisi, al-Humaydi, Ibn Abi ‘Umar, Musaddad, Ahmad ibn Mani’, Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, ‘Abd ibn Humayd, and al-Harith ibn Abi Usamah. He also added material from Musnad Abi Ya’la and Musnad Ishaq ibn Rahawayh that is not found in Majma’ az-Zawa’id.

Seventh: Takhrij Works

These are books written specifically to trace and document the sources of hadiths contained in a particular work. The following are among the most important examples:

1. Nasb ar-Rayah li Ahadith al-Hidayah by Imam al-Hafizh Jamal ad-Din Abu Muhammad ‘Abd Allah ibn Yusuf az-Zayla’i al-Hanafi (d. 762 AH). In this work, he traced the hadiths found in al-Hidayah, a Hanafi fiqh work by ‘Ali ibn Abi Bakr al-Marghinani, one of the major Hanafi jurists, who died in 593 AH.

2. Al-Mughni ‘an Haml al-Asfar fi al-Asfar fi Takhrij ma fi al-Ihya’ min al-Akhbar by the great Hafizh, Imam ‘Abd ar-Rahim ibn al-Husayn al-‘Iraqi (d. 806 AH), the teacher of al-Hafizh Ibn Hajar and one of the foremost hadith scholars of his time. In this work, he traced the hadiths contained in a widely circulated and important book among Muslims, namely Ihya’ ‘Ulum ad-Din by Imam al-Ghazali. His method was to cite a portion of a hadith from the Ihya’, then identify who transmitted it and which Companion narrated it, and finally discuss whether it was sahih, hasan, or weak.

3. At-Talkhis al-Habir fi Takhrij Ahadith ar-Rafi’i al-Kabir by al-Hafizh Ibn Hajar. In this work, he traced the hadiths found in ash-Sharh al-Kabir by ar-Rafi’i, which is a commentary on al-Wajiz, Imam al-Ghazali’s work on Shafi’i fiqh. In preparing this takhrij, Ibn Hajar summarized a number of earlier books written on the hadiths of ash-Sharh al-Kabir and also benefited from az-Zayla’i’s Nasb ar-Rayah. His work therefore became a rich compilation gathering benefits that had previously been scattered across other books. His method was to cite part of a hadith mentioned in ash-Sharh al-Kabir, trace it back to its sources, mention its various routes and narrations, and discuss it in detail in terms of jarh wa ta’dil and authenticity or weakness. He would then comprehensively mention other hadiths conveying similar meanings. In this way, the book became an indispensable reference in the field of hadiths pertaining to legal rulings.
