Translated by: Reza Ervani bin Asmanu

This article, “Types of Hadith Compilations,” is included in the Science of Hadith Category

Fifth: Comprehensive Hadith Compilations — Al-Majami’

These are books that collect hadiths from a number of hadith source works. They are arranged according to two methods:

First Method: Arrangement According to Chapters

The most important reference works using this method are:

1. Jami’ al-Usul min Ahadith ar-Rasul by Ibn al-Athir, al-Mubarak ibn Muhammad al-Jazari (d. 606 AH). In this work, he gathered hadiths from the two Sahih collections, al-Muwatta’, and the three Sunan collections, removing their chains of transmission and supplementing them with brief explanations of unfamiliar words. However, he did not clarify the grading of the hadiths found in the Sunan collections, and he did not even include at-Tirmidhi’s comments on his hadiths. This leaves the reader needing to investigate that aspect separately. A later edition of the book was supplemented with detailed takhrij of the hadiths, tracing each hadith to its source book and identifying the relevant chapter, volume, and page, thereby making the work easier to benefit from.

2. Kanz al-‘Ummal fi Sunan al-Aqwal wa al-Af’al by the hadith scholar ‘Ali ibn Husam al-Muttaqi al-Hindi (d. 975 AH). It is among the most comprehensive works in this field. According to the author’s count, it gathers hadiths from ninety-three different books, making it an exceptionally extensive compilation. However, it does not explain the status or grading of the hadiths. The author also notes shortcomings in its source referencing, since at times a hadith is attributed to a remote or less commonly consulted source even though it is also found in the Sahih collections, or even in the most authentic of them.

Second Method: Arrangement According to the First Word of the Hadith in Alphabetical Order

The most important reference works using this method are:

1. Al-Jami’ al-Kabir, also known as Jam’ al-Jawami’, by Imam al-Hafizh Jalal ad-Din as-Suyuti (d. 911 AH). This work is the principal source upon which Kanz al-‘Ummal, mentioned above, was based.

2. Al-Jami’ as-Saghir li Ahadith al-Bashir an-Nadhir, also by Imam as-Suyuti. He abridged it from Al-Jami’ al-Kabir, removed repetitions, and added further hadiths. The total number of hadiths in the work reached 10,031. The book gained considerable acceptance among scholars and became the subject of numerous commentaries.

However, some of the abbreviations used here differ from those employed in Al-Jami’ al-Kabir. For example, the symbol (ق) in Al-Jami’ as-Saghir refers to a hadith agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim, whereas in Al-Jami’ al-Kabir it refers to a hadith narrated by al-Bayhaqi. This should be carefully noted. One of the first priorities of a student of hadith should therefore be to study the introduction of every hadith compilation in order to understand its symbols, methodology, and objectives.
