Types of Hadith Compilations (Part One)

This article, “Types of Hadith Compilations,” is included in the Science of Hadith Category
Hadith scholars produced many different types of compilations and displayed considerable ingenuity in organizing them. This diversity enabled their works to meet the various needs of scholars and researchers when consulting hadith references. Here we will mention the most important types of hadith compilations:
First: Books Arranged According to Chapters:
The method of this type of compilation is to gather hadiths dealing with the same subject together under a general heading that encompasses them, such as the Book of Prayer, the Book of Zakah, the Book of Sales, and so forth. The hadiths are then divided into chapters, each of which contains one or more hadiths dealing with a particular issue. Each chapter is given a heading indicating its subject, such as: “Chapter: The Key to Prayer Is Purification.” Hadith scholars refer to such a chapter heading as a tarjamah.
The advantage of this type of book is the ease with which it can be consulted. It is often the first kind of work that comes to mind for a student of knowledge or a hadith researcher. If someone wishes to find hadiths dealing with a particular issue, the subject itself directs him to the relevant chapters. Likewise, if he is searching for a specific hadith he has previously encountered and wants to trace it back to the sources of the Sunnah, the subject of the hadith helps determine the chapter in which he should look for it.
However, benefiting fully from books arranged by chapters requires a certain scholarly sensitivity that enables the student to identify the subject of a hadith, as well as familiarity with the methods used by the leading scholars in formulating their chapter headings. At times, they may place a hadith in a chapter other than the one a reader would initially expect, intending thereby to demonstrate that the hadith also indicates another legal or scholarly point. This occurs frequently in the Sahih of Imam al-Bukhari and is considered one of the distinctive features of his work. Hence the famous saying: “The fiqh of al-Bukhari lies in his chapter headings.”
Compilation according to chapters takes several different forms. Among them are the following:
1. Al-Jawami’ (Comprehensive Hadith Collections):
In the terminology of hadith scholars, a Jami’ is a hadith book arranged according to chapters that contains hadiths covering all the major subjects and branches of religion. These are traditionally grouped into eight principal categories: creed, legal rulings, sirah, manners, tafsir, tribulations, signs of the Hour, and virtues. There are many works of the Jawami’ type, the most famous of which are the following three:
- Al-Jami’ as-Sahih by Imam al-Bukhari.
- Al-Jami’ as-Sahih by Imam Muslim.
- Al-Jami’ by Imam at-Tirmidhi, commonly known as Sunan at-Tirmidhi. It came to be called a Sunan because of its particular attention to hadiths concerning legal rulings.
