Types of Hadith Compilations (Part Six)
Translated by: Reza Ervani bin Asmanu
This article, “Types of Hadith Compilations,” is included in the Science of Hadith Category
Eighth: Al-Ajza’ (Individual Hadith Booklets)
In the terminology of hadith scholars, a Juz’ is a work that gathers hadiths narrated from a single person, whether that person is from the generation of the Companions or from those who came after them. Examples include a Juz’ of the Hadiths of Abu Bakr and a Juz’ of the Hadiths of Malik.
The term Juz’ is also used for a work devoted to examining the chains of transmission of a single hadith and discussing it in detail. An example is Ikhtiyar al-Awla fi Hadith Ikhtisam al-Mala’ al-A’la by al-Hafizh Ibn Rajab.
Hadith Ajza’ may also be written on specific and narrowly defined topics, such as Juz’ al-Qira’ah Khalf al-Imam by al-Bukhari and ar-Rihlah fi Talab al-Hadith by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi.
A Juz’ may also contain a selection of hadiths chosen by the author for a particular reason or consideration, such as collections of ten, twenty, forty, fifty, or eighty hadiths.
The size of these Ajza’ varies from only a few folios to several dozen pages, although they are generally small works. One of their distinctive qualities is that they reveal the depth of knowledge possessed by the leading scholars, since dedicating an independent study to a narrow subject requires comprehensive investigation and considerable scholarly depth.
Ninth: Al-Mashayikhat
These are books in which hadith scholars gather the names of their teachers, together with the books or hadiths they received from them, including their chains of transmission back to the authors of those books.
Scholars employed various methods in arranging works of this kind, some of which were called a fihris or a thabat. Among the most famous are the Barnamaj of ar-Ru’ayni entitled al-Irad li Nubdhah al-Mustafad min ar-Riwayah wa al-Isnad, and the Fihrist of Imam Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Khayr. Both are valuable works and have been published.
Tenth: Al-‘Ilal (Hidden Defects in Hadith)
These are books that collect mu’allal hadiths — hadiths affected by hidden defects — together with explanations of those defects. Writing works on ‘ilal represents one of the highest levels of hadith scholarship, because it requires persistent effort, long patience in tracing chains of transmission, close examination, and repeated scrutiny in order to uncover subtle defects concealed beneath an outward appearance that may suggest authenticity.
Scholars also paid considerable attention to the proper conduct of students and hadith scholars. They discussed these matters in works devoted to the transmission of hadith, while al-Khatib al-Baghdadi dedicated an independent and valuable book to the subject entitled Al-Jami’ li Akhlaq ar-Rawi wa Adab as-Sami’.
