Types of Hadith Compilations (Part Three)
Translated by: Reza Ervani bin Asmanu
This article, “Types of Hadith Compilations,” is included in the Science of Hadith Category
1. Al-Masanid (Musnad Collections):
A Musnad is a book in which hadiths are arranged according to the Companions who narrated them, may Allah be pleased with them. The Companions may be ordered alphabetically, according to precedence in embracing Islam, or according to nobility of lineage. There are a great many Musnad collections. The most famous and highly regarded among them is the Musnad of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, followed by the Musnad of Abu Ya’la al-Mawsili.
2. Al-Atraf (Atraf Collections):
Al-Atraf is the plural of tarf. A tarf of a hadith is a portion of the hadith, or a phrase that serves to identify it, such as “the hadith of deeds being judged by intentions,” “the hadith of the trustworthy treasurer,” or “the hadith of Jibril’s questioning.”
Atraf works are books in which their authors limit themselves to mentioning a portion that identifies the hadith, and then list its chains of transmission as found in the source works that narrate it with their isnads. Some authors cite the complete isnad, while others mention only part of it. These books do not reproduce the entire matn of the hadith, nor is the identifying phrase necessarily quoted verbatim from the hadith itself. In addition to what has already been mentioned, this method offers several benefits:
1. It facilitates identifying the various isnads of a hadith because they are gathered together in one place.
2. It makes it possible to know which compilers of the principal source works narrated the hadith and in which chapter they included it. In this sense, such works function as highly useful indexes.
Among the most famous works of Atraf are the following two books:
1. Tuhfat al-Ashraf bi Ma’rifat al-Atraf by al-Hafizh al-Imam Abu al-Hajjaj Yusuf ibn ‘Abd ar-Rahman al-Mizzi (d. 742 AH).
2. Dhakha’ir al-Mawarith fi ad-Dalalah ‘ala Mawadi’ al-Hadith by Shaykh ‘Abd al-Ghani an-Nabulusi (d. 1143 AH).
3. Al-Ma’ajim (Mu’jam Collections):
In the terminology of hadith scholars, a Mu’jam is a book in which hadiths are arranged according to the author’s teachers. Most commonly, their names are ordered alphabetically. Thus, the compiler may begin with hadiths narrated from a teacher named Aban, then Ibrahim, and so on.
The most famous works of this type are the three Mu’jam collections of the great hadith scholar and Hafizh Abu al-Qasim Sulayman ibn Ahmad at-Tabarani (d. 360 AH), namely:
– Al-Mu’jam as-Saghir and Al-Mu’jam al-Awsat, both of which are arranged according to the names of his teachers.
– Al-Mu’jam al-Kabir, which is arranged according to the Musnads of the Companions in alphabetical order. It is an extensive reference work and is regarded as the largest of the Mu’jam collections. Because of its fame, when scholars simply say “al-Mu’jam,” or state that “at-Tabarani narrated it,” the intended reference is often Al-Mu’jam al-Kabir.
4. Books Arranged According to the Opening Words of Hadiths:
These books are arranged alphabetically according to the first word of each hadith, beginning with hamzah (أ), then ba (ب), and so on. This method makes consultation very easy, but it requires precise knowledge of the first word of the hadith in its exact wording. Otherwise, one’s effort in searching for the hadith may be wasted. Works of this type follow two methods:
a. Kutub Majami’ (Compilation Works): These gather hadiths from a number of different hadith books, as will be discussed in the next type.
b. Books on Hadiths Widely Circulated on People’s Tongues: These deal with hadiths commonly quoted among the general public. Scholars devoted special works to collecting them and clarifying their status. Among the most famous and important works of this type are the following two:
1. Al-Maqasid al-Hasanah fi al-Ahadith al-Mushtahirah ‘ala al-Alsinah by al-Imam al-Hafizh Shams ad-Din Muhammad ibn ‘Abd ar-Rahman as-Sakhawi (d. 902 AH).
2. Kashf al-Khafa’ wa Muzil al-Ilbas ‘amma Ishtahara min al-Hadith ‘ala Alsinat an-Nas by the scholar and hadith expert Isma’il ibn Muhammad al-‘Ajluni (d. 1162 AH).
Also included in this category are the indexes and reference keys prepared by modern scholars for hadith collections, arranged alphabetically. Among such works is Miftah as-Sahihayn by at-Tuqadi, as well as the indexes to Sahih Muslim and Sunan Ibn Majah prepared by Muhammad Fu’ad ‘Abd al-Baqi — may Allah have mercy on him and richly reward him.
