Abdullah bin Mas’ud: The Leader of the Quran Reciters and One of the Great Scholars of Islam (Part Three)

An Inspirational Exegete

ابن مسعود (رضي الله عنه) من كبار مفسري الصحابة وأعيانهم، وإن معاصرة ابن مسعود لنزول القرآن، كان يضيف أبعادا هامة، ودعما لآرائه ونظراته وفلج حجته، يقول رضي الله عنه 

Abdullah bin Mas’ud (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was one of the most prominent Quranic exegetes among the Companions and a highly respected figure. His close proximity to the time of the Quran’s revelation added significant depth and authority to his views and interpretations. He once said:

(والذي لا إله غيره ما من كتاب الله سورة إلا أنا أعلم حيث نزلت، وما من آية إلا أنا أعلم فيما نزلت، ولو أعلم أحدا هو أعلم بكتاب الله مني تبلغه، لركبت الإبل إليه)،

“By Allah, besides whom there is no deity, there is no chapter of Allah’s Book that I do not know where it was revealed, nor any verse that I do not know the reason for its revelation. If I knew of someone more knowledgeable than me about the Book of Allah, and I could reach them, I would ride my camel to meet them.”

وكانت منابع التفسير عنده من مجمل ما سمعه من النبي ﷺ، والربط بين الآيات وما فهمه من خلال الأحاديث النبوية، وما استنبطه من الوقائع والأحداث، والمشاهد والأشخاص التي تنزلت فيها آيات قرآنية، وما يمكن فهمه باللغة، وما أملته عليه روحه من فهم، وكان تفسيره متشعب النواحي، متعدد الاتجاهات، واسع الأفق، زخم العطاء، مع دقته في الاستنباط والنظر، وقوة في الحجة، وإبداع وروعة في الأداء، مستعملاً الترغيب والترهيب.

His sources of tafsir stemmed from what he heard directly from the Prophet ﷺ, connections he made between verses, his understanding of prophetic traditions, his analysis of events and individuals that served as the context for specific revelations, his mastery of the Arabic language, and the inspiration he received from his reflection. His exegesis was comprehensive, multi-dimensional, and marked by precision in deduction, strong argumentation, and a captivating style. He effectively used encouragement (targhib) and warnings (tarhib) in his explanations.

المعلم الفذ

A Distinguished Teacher

سمع ابن مسعود (رضي الله عنه) حديثا عظيما من النبي ﷺ يرغب فيه بنشر العلم، ويمدح فاعله ويعده بالثواب الجزيل، مما ألهب في نفسه شعوره الكامن، بتحصيل الخير من هذا الجانب، وأخرجه إلى عالم الشهادة، ويحدثنا بما وعى فيقول:

Abdullah bin Mas’ud once heard a profound hadith from the Prophet ﷺ that motivated him to spread knowledge, praising those who conveyed it and promising great rewards. This hadith ignited his hidden passion to pursue goodness through teaching. He narrated:

(سمعت رسول الله ﷺ، يقول: نَضَّرَ اللهُ امرأً سمِعَ منَّا شيئًا فبلَّغَهُ كما سمِعَهُ ، فرُبَّ مُبَلَّغٍ أوْعَى من سامِعٍ ).

“I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘May Allah brighten the face of a person who hears something from us and conveys it as they heard it, for perhaps the one who conveys it understands it better than the one who heard it.’”

وكذا فإنه ‏(رضي الله عنه) ‏ أخذ يرغب الناس في العلم، واغتنام وجود العلماء قبل أن يفوتهم ذلك، وله في ذلك أقوال رائعة، من ذلك قوله:

This inspired Abdullah bin Mas’ud to encourage people to value knowledge and take advantage of the presence of scholars before losing the opportunity. He often made remarkable statements, such as:

(اغدُ عالماً أو متعلماً، ولا تغد فيما بين ذلك، فإنما بين ذلك جاهل أو جهل، وإن الملائكة لتبسط أجنحتها لرجل غدا يطلب العلم من الرضى لما يصنع)، 

“Be a scholar or a learner, and do not be anything else, for anything else is ignorance or a cause of ignorance. Indeed, the angels spread their wings for the one who goes out seeking knowledge, pleased with what they are doing.”

ويقول (رضي الله عنه):

He also said:

(عليكم بالعلم قبل أن يرفع، ورفعه موت رواته، فوالذي نفسي بيده ليودن رجال قتلوا في سبيل الله شهداء أن يبعثهم الله علماء، لما يرون من كرامتهم، فإن أحدا لم يولد عالما وإنما العلم بالتعلم).

“Pursue knowledge before it is taken away. Its removal is through the death of its bearers. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, there are men who were martyred in the cause of Allah and wish they could be resurrected as scholars because of the honor they see scholars possess. No one is born knowledgeable, but knowledge is acquired through learning.”
