Reading the Quran Without Understanding Its Meanings

السؤال

Question:

إذا قرأ القرأن بدون فهم معانيه فهل يجزى به وهل هناك فرق بين القراءة من الجوال والمصحف؟

If someone reads the Quran without understanding its meanings, will he still be rewarded? And is there any difference between reading from the Mushaf and reading from a mobile phone?

الإجابــة

Answer:

الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله، وعلى آله وصحبه، أما بعد:

All praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his companions. To proceed:

فاعلم أن المسلم ينبغي له أن يتدبر معاني القرآن ويسأل عما يشكل عليه منها.

Know that a Muslim is encouraged to reflect upon the meanings of the Quran and to ask about what he finds difficult to understand.

فقد قال تعالى:

Allah, the Exalted, says:

كِتَابٌ أَنزَلْنَاهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَارَكٌ لِّيَدَّبَّرُوا آيَاتِهِ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُوْلُوا الْأَلْبَابِ {ص:٢٩}.

“[This is] a Book We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], blessed that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.” (Surah Sad verse 29).

وقال تعالى:

And He also says:

أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ الْقُرْآنَ أَمْ عَلَى قُلُوبٍ أَقْفَالُهَا {محمد:٢٤}.

“Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’an, or are there locks upon [their] hearts?” (Surah Muhammad verse 24).

ولكنه إذا قرأ آية دون فهم لمعناها فلا يحرمه ذلك من كسب ثواب تلاوتها لعموم حديث الترمذي: 

However, if a person reads a verse without understanding its meaning, that does not prevent him from receiving the reward of its recitation, based on the general meaning of the hadith narrated by at-Tirmidhi:

من قرأ حرفا من كتاب الله فله به حسنة والحسنة بعشر أمثالها.

“Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah will receive one good deed, and the good deed is multiplied tenfold.” (Hadith Narrated by at-Tirmidhi)

ولا فرق في ذلك بين القراءة في المصحف وبين القراءة في الجوال.

There is no difference in that regard between reading from the Mushaf and reading from a mobile phone.
