We Would Ransom You with Our Fathers and Mothers (Part One)

إن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أحب إلى كل مؤمن من نفسه ومن أهله وماله وولده، كيف لا ومحبته صلى الله عليه وسلم أصل من أصول الدين، قال صلى الله عليه وسلم: “لا يؤمن أحدكم حتى أكون أحب إليه من والده وولده والناس أجمعين”.

Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is more beloved to every believer than himself, his family, his wealth, and his children. How could it be otherwise, when loving him is among the foundations of the religion? He said: “None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child, and all people.”

وقد أخذ بيد عمر بن الخطاب يومًا فقال عمر: يا رسول الله، لأنت أحب إليَّ من كل شيء إلا من نفسي. فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: “لا والذي نفسي بيده حتى أكون أحب إليك من نفسك” فقال عمر: فإنه الآن والله لأنت أحب إليَّ من نفسي. فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: “الآن يا عمر”.

One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took the hand of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb. ʿUmar said, “O Messenger of Allah, you are more beloved to me than anything except myself.” The Prophet replied, “No, by the One in Whose hand is my soul, not until I am more beloved to you than your own self.” ʿUmar said, “Then by Allah, now you are more beloved to me than myself.” The Prophet said, “Now, O ʿUmar.”

ولقد شنع الله على من كان أهله وماله أحب إليه من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال سبحانه وتعالى: {قُلْ إِنْ كَانَ آبَاؤُكُمْ وَأَبْنَاؤُكُمْ وَإِخْوَانُكُمْ وَأَزْوَاجُكُمْ وَعَشِيرَتُكُمْ وَأَمْوَالٌ اقْتَرَفْتُمُوهَا وَتِجَارَةٌ تَخْشَوْنَ كَسَادَهَا وَمَسَاكِنُ تَرْضَوْنَهَا أَحَبَّ إِلَيْكُمْ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَجِهَادٍ فِي سَبِيلِهِ فَتَرَبَّصُوا حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ اللَّهُ بِأَمْرِهِ وَاللَّهُ لا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْفَاسِقِينَ} [التوبة:٢٤].

Allah rebukes those who love their families, wealth, and status more than Allah and His Messenger. He says: “Say: If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your spouses, your clan, the wealth you have acquired, a trade you fear may decline, and dwellings you cherish are more beloved to you than Allah and His Messenger and striving in His path, then wait until Allah brings about His command. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.” (Surah At-Tawbah: 24)

فانظر كيف توعدهم ربنا: {فَتَرَبَّصُوا حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ اللَّهُ بِأَمْرِهِ}، ثم أعلمهم أنهم بهذا فاسقون ضالون.

Observe how our Lord threatens them with His words: “Then wait until Allah brings about His command.” He then makes clear that such an attitude is defiant disobedience and misguidance.

يقول الدكتور محمد دراز في شرحه لقول النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: “ثلاث من كن فيه وجد بهن حلاوة الإيمان، أن يكون الله ورسوله أحب إليه مما سواهما”.

Dr. Muḥammad Darāz—explaining the Prophet’s saying, “Three qualities, whoever has them will taste the sweetness of faith: that Allah and His Messenger are more beloved to him than anything else …”—states that love for Allah and His Messenger is the highest summit of reasoned, experiential love.

ومحبة الله ورسوله هي أرقى أنواع المحبة العقلية وأقواها، فمن كان باعث المحبة عنده معرفة ما في المحبوب من كمال ذاتي فالله تعالى أحق بمحبته؛ إذ الكمال خاصة ذاته، والجمال الأتم ليس إلا لصفاته، والرسول أحق من يتلوه في تلك المحبة؛ لأنه أكرم الخلق عند ربه، وهو ذو الخلق العظيم والهدي القويم،

Loving Allah and His Messenger is the loftiest and strongest form of rational love. If one’s motive for love is recognizing the intrinsic perfection of the beloved, then Allah is most deserving of that love—perfection is unique to His Essence, and absolute beauty belongs only to His Attributes. The Messenger is most deserving to follow after Him in that love, for he is the most honored of creation with his Lord, of exalted character and upright guidance.

ومن كانت محبته للغير تقاس بمقدار ما يوصله إليه ذلك الغير من المنافع، وما يغدق عليه من الخيرات، فالله تعالى أحق بهذه المحبة أيضًا، وإن نعمه علينا تجري مع الأنفاس ودقات القلوب ولا نعمة إلا هو مصدرها، {وَمَا بِكُمْ مِنْ نِعْمَةٍ فَمِنَ اللَّهِ} [النحل:٥٣] … وهذا الرسول الكريم هو واسطة النعمة العظمى؛ إذ هو الذي أخرجنا الله به من الظلمات إلى النور ومن الضلالة إلى الهدى، واستنقذنا به من النار بعد أن كنا على شفا حفرة منها، فليس بعد الله أحدٌ أمن علينا منه، ومحبته الحقيقية شعبة من محبة الله.

And if one’s love for others is measured by the benefits they bring and the goodness they bestow, then Allah is also most deserving of that love—for His favors flow with every breath and heartbeat, and every blessing has Him as its source—“And whatever blessing you have is from Allah.” (Surah An-Nahl: 53). As for the noble Messenger, he is the conduit of the greatest favor: through him Allah brought us from darkness to light, from misguidance to guidance, and rescued us from the Fire when we stood at its very brink. After Allah, none has a greater claim upon us than he; thus, true love for the Messenger is a branch of love for Allah.
