Question:

Is it permissible to fast openly?

Answer :

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his companions. To proceed:

Indeed, there is no harm in declaring the fast or showing it, as long as showing it does not involve showing off (riya’) or seeking a reputation (sum’ah). This is evidenced by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) informing others of his fasting, as in his saying to the Mother of the Believers, Aisha, when she said to him: “We were given a gift of hais (a mixture of dates and ghee).” He said:

“Show it to me, for indeed I have started my day fasting.” (Narrated by Muslim).

This indicates that declaring the fast is not problematic. And Allah knows best.
