Question:

I want to ask about the disliked (makruh) acts, innovations (bid’ah), and the recommended (mustahab) acts in both obligatory and voluntary fasting, and whether the use of kohl (eyeliner) is considered an innovation during fasting or outside of it?

Answer :

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his companions. To proceed: We have previously issued a fatwa explaining the disliked acts of fasting, so we refer the questioner to it, which is found here:

As for the recommended or Sunnah acts, it is Sunnah to delay the Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) as long as the onset of dawn is not feared, and to hasten the Iftar (breaking of the fast) when the sunset is confirmed. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): “Hasten the breaking of the fast and delay the pre-dawn meal.” (Narrated by At-Tabarani from Ummu Hakim).

It is also Sunnah for one who is insulted to say: “I am fasting,” according to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) regarding the fasting person: “If anyone insults him or fights him, let him say: ‘I am fasting, I am fasting.’ (Narrated by Muslim from Abu Hurairah).

It is also Sunnah to break the fast with fresh dates (ruthab); if they are not available, then with dry dates (tamr); and if they are not available, then by drinking a few sips of water. This is based on what was narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawood, and At-Tirmidhi from Anas, who said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to break his fast with fresh dates before praying; if there were no fresh dates, then with dry dates; and if there were no dry dates, he would take a few sips of water.”

It is Sunnah to recite what has been narrated at the time of breaking the fast, including: “O Allah, for You I have fasted and with Your provision I have broken my fast. The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills.” (Narrated by Abu Dawud, Ad-Daraqutni, and others).

As for the use of kohl for the fasting person, its ruling has been previously explained in another fatwa here:

So we refer the questioner to it. And Allah knows best.
