Question:
What is the ruling on deliberately breaking the fast in Ramadan?
Answer:
Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his companions. To proceed: Indeed, deliberately breaking the fast during the day in Ramadan is one of the major sins (kabair), a violation of the sanctity of this great time, and a contradiction of the command of Allah the Almighty in His saying:
“… then complete the fast until the night.” [Al-Baqarah: 187]
And from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“Whoever breaks the fast for one day in Ramadan without a concession granted by Allah, fasting for an entire lifetime will not make up for it, even if he performs it.” (Narrated by Abu Dawood, Ibnu Majah, and At-Tirmidhi).
Al-Bukhari mentioned from Abu Hurairah in a marfu’ (attributed to the Prophet) form: “Whoever breaks the fast for one day in Ramadan without an excuse or illness, a lifetime of fasting will not make up for it, even if he performs it.”
Therefore, it is obligatory for the one who deliberately breaks the fast to repent to Allah the Almighty first from this major sin. Additionally, he must make up (qadha) the days he missed. In the event that the reason for breaking the fast was sexual intercourse (jima’) during the day in Ramadan, then in addition to making it up, he is also required to perform a heavy expiation (kaffarah mughallazhah). Please refer to its details in the other fatwa here:
And Allah knows best.
